What is the author of Beowulf portraying about their society through the characters?
In Beowulf the author tries to teach us about bravery, and why it’s so important societally.
Beowulf is our protagonist, as the name suggests, of our story. Slaying all manner of beast and
becoming the king of the Geats and finally meeting his demise at the claws of a great dragon. In
the story it is not only Beowulf’s great strength that makes him stand out, but his astounding
courage. Fighting Grendel and his mother without a shred of armor and bringing no weapon
either. Another recurring event is Beowulf’s men fleeing, leaving him alone to defeat the beast.
Even in his old age he still manages to injure the dragon using his bravery. But in this last event
not all his men flee. Wiglaf stays and helps Beowulf slay the dragon, but Beowulf knows he will
die from his wounds so gives Wiglaf the new right to rule.
