Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: Discuss the role of biotechnology with reference to pharmacy

CO2 :: Explain the concept of genetic engineering and its applications in pharmaceutical sciences

CO3 :: Identify the various types of immunity and hypersensitivity reactions

CO4 :: Apply the knowledge of microbial genetics in production of various pharmaceutical


preparations

CO5 :: Use the principles of protein engineering for development of products in pharma industries

CO6 :: Describe the basics of fermentation technology and it's application in pharmacy

Unit I
Introduction to biotechnology and enzyme immobilization : brief introduction to biotechnology
with reference to pharmaceutical sciences, enzyme biotechnology- methods of enzyme immobilization
and applications, biosensors- working and applications of biosensors in pharmaceutical industries
Unit II
Genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology : study of cloning vectors, restriction
endonucleases, DNA ligase, recombinant DNA technology, application of genetic engineering in
medicine, application of r DNA technology and genetic engineering in the production of:interferon,
vaccines- hepatitis- B, hormones-Insulin, brief introduction to PCR
Unit III
Introduction to Immunology : types of immunity- humoral immunity, cellular immunity, structure
of Immunoglobulins, structure and function of MHC, hypersensitivity reactions, Immune stimulation
and Immune suppressions
Unit IV
Microbial genetics : transformation, transduction, conjugation, plasmids and transposons, study of
the production of - penicillins, citric acid, Vitamin B12, glutamic acid, griseofulvin, blood Products:
collection, processing and storage of whole human blood, dried human plasma, plasma substituties
Unit V
Protein Engineering : brief introduction to protein engineering, Use of microbes in industry,
production of enzymes- general consideration, amylase, catalase, peroxidase, lipase, basic principles
of genetic engineering
Unit VI
Fermentation technology and biotechnological products : fermentation methods and general
requirements, study of media, equipments, sterilization methods, aeration process, stirring, large
scale production fermenter design and its various controls
