INTRO TO
DOUBLY REINFORCED BEAMS
Ø If a beam cross section is limited because of
architectural or other reasons, then the concrete
may not be able to develop the compressive force
required to resist the given bending moment.
Ø In such cases, reinforcement is added in the
compression zone, resulting in a doubly reinforced
beam.
Ø A doubly reinforced beam is defined as a beam with
both tension and compression reinforcement.
INTRO TO
DOUBLY REINFORCED BEAMS
Ø Doubly reinforced section has following beneficial effects:
• Sometimes, beam depth is limited due to architectural or
other considerations. These shallow beams can not
develop the compressive force required to resist the given
bending moment.
• This makes the concrete over - reinforced and it shows
brittle behavior.
• In such cases compression steel is placed to improve the
compressive strength of beam.
• In addition, an approx. equal amount of extra steel is
provided on the tension side to balance the extra force
developed by the compression steel.
INTRO TO
DOUBLY REINFORCED BEAMS
• Compression steel increases ductility of the beam by
making it under reinforced and also by improving the
compression behavior
• Compression steel reduces the long term deflection of
the member due to creep and shrinkage.
• Compression bars can be used as hanger bars to
support the shear stirrups during construction and to
provide resistance against some accidental negative
moments.

A’s = Area of compression steel
d’ = Distance between comp face and comp steel
ρ̅b = ρb for doubly reinforced beam
ρ’ = A’s/bd
ρ̅cy = Minimum tensile steel ratio that will ensure
yielding of compression steel.
ρ̅max = Maximum steel ratio permitted by ACI
Code for doubly reinforced beam

COMPRESSION AND TENSION STEEL BOTH AT
YIELD STRESS.
Ø If, in a doubly reinforced beam, the tensile reinforce-
ment ratio ρ, is less than or equal to ρmax(0.004), the
strength of the beam may be approximated by
disregarding the compression bars i.e. like singly
reinforced beam.
Ø Strength of the beam will be controlled by tensile
yielding of steel.

YIELD STRESS. Contd.
Ø If ρ is larger than ρmax(0.004), the section is treated as
doubly reinforced and an elaborate analysis is
required. Fig.4.13 shows a doubly reinforced beam.
Assume both As and A’s are stressed to fy at failure.
Ø The total resisting moment can be thought of as sum of
two parts. The first part, Mn1, is provided by the couple
consisting of force in compression steel
Ø As’ and the force in an equal area of tension steel.

COMPRESSION STEEL BELOW YIELD STRESS
Ø In many cases such as for wide, shallow beams, beams
with more than the usual concrete cover over the
compression bars, beam with high yield strength steel,
or beam with relaAvely small amount of tensile
reinforcement, the compression bar will be below the
yield stress at failure.
Ø It is necessary, therefore, to develop more generally
applicable equaAons to account for the possibility that
the compression reinforcement has not yielded when
the DRB fails in flexure.
