UNDERGROUND WATERPROOFING

1 PART 1- GENERAL

1.1 Description

Sheet membrane waterproofing for the following:

A. General waterproofing for areas below grade as indicated on Drawings.
B. Wet areas.
C. Retaining walls.
D. Lining for planter boxes.
All underground concrete structures must be damp proofed with bituminous emulsion 250-300
microns DFT.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Products Data: Submit specifications, installation instructions and general

recommendations by the manufacturer of membrane waterproofing materials. Include
published data or certified test data for each material showing compliance with the
requirements. Indicate by transmittal form that one copy of each installation instruction
has been distributed to the installer.
B. The Contractor shall submit the following information, data, and drawings, to the
Engineer for review and approval:
Before commencing work:

1. Manufacturer's recommended specification and instructions for transporting,

handling and storage of materials.
2. Certificate of compliance stating that the materials used, and the installation
procedures conform to all requirements of this Specification.
3. Qualifications of the membrane waterproofing installers.
4. Contractor's proposed installation procedures based on instructions and
recommendations by the manufacturer.
5. Manufacturer's Quality Control and Quality Assurance Program related to the
production, testing and handling.
6. Catalog data sheets related to proposed materials and three (3) sets of samples for
all proposed materials.

1.3 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. Deliver materials in manufacturer's unopened, labeled packing and in compliance with

the manufacturer's storage, handling, installation, and protection requirements.

1.4 WARRANTY

A. Provide written warranty, agreeing to replace and repair defective materials and
workmanship. Warranty includes responsibility for removal and replacement of other
work which concern sheet waterproofing. Warranty period is 10 years after date of
substantial completion.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer: Obtain primary waterproofing materials of each type required from a

single manufacturer to the greatest extent possible. Provide secondary materials only
as recommended by manufacturer of primary materials.

1.6 JOB CONDITIONS

A. Substrate: Proceed with waterproofing after completing substrate construction,

openings and penetrating works.
B. Weather: Proceed with waterproofing and associated works only when existing and
forecast weather conditions permit work to be performed in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations and warranty requirements.

2 PART 2- PRODUCTS

2.1 WATERPROOFING MATERIALS

A. Waterproofing membrane: High performance polymer modified bituminous membrane,

two layers (4 mm thick each), reinforced with non-woven polyester mat of 250 g/m2.
The polyester combines with high tensile strength with an elongation above 40%.
Membrane shall be fully bonded, torch applied to the primed surface comply with the
following requirements or any other approved equivalent:
1. Actual thickness 2x4mm.
2. Nominal Unit Weight, (Plain) 4 Kg/m2
3. Nominal Unit Weight, (Mineral surfaced) 4.5 Kg/m2
4. Carrier (Polyester) Weight 250 g/m2
5. Tensile Strength, longitudinal 1150 N/5cm
6. Tensile Strength, transversal 1000 N/5cm
7. Softening point (R & B), ºC. >150
8. Penetration at 25 'C, 0.1 mm 20-35
9. Elongation at Break, longitudinal 50 %
10. Elongation at Break, transversal 55 %
11. Cold flexibility at – 10ºC No cracking
B. Water for planter boxes:

substrate.

C. Waterproofing for general wet areas (toilets and wet areas): Single membrane, 5mm
thick, fully bonded, torch applied to the primed substrate.

2.2 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS

A. Primers: Asphaltic primer shall conform to ASTM D 41 with following properties:

1. Viscosity at 25'C 25 - 125, ASTM D 88.
2. Distillation, volume % of the primer
Upto 225'C 35 (minimum) ASTM D 402

Upto 360'C 65 (maximum) ASTM D 402

3. Water, volume% 0.5 (maximum), ASTM D 95

B. Protection Board: 6 mm nominal thick shall be manufactured from selected fine
aggregate bound in oxidized asphalt, encased ·between two layers of asphalt saturated
glass paper or felt paper to form a rigid, dense, and strong board with high compressive
strength, and nominal unit weight of 7 kg/m2
C. Vapor Barrier Under lean concrete: Polyethylene sheeting conforming to ASTM E154,
with minimum 200 microns thick, and shall be laid with 300 mm overlapping.
D. Aluminum flushing (termination details)

3 PART 3- EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. General: Waterproofing works shall be executed by a specialized Subcontractor

recommended by the waterproofing and/or lining manufacturer and approved by the
Engineer. The typical installation details shall be in accordance with drawings.
B. Comply with waterproofing and/or lining manufacturer's recommendations regarding
installation details, surface preparation, torch applied process, priming of surfaces as
well as the overlapping.
C. Substrate shall be smooth, hard dry and free from high spots and depressions.
Substrate shall be swept clean and free from dust, loose cement scale, oil, grease,
foreign substances and debris.
D. Starting at the low point of the slab, apply the waterproofing membrane fully bonded laid
torch applied for horizontal areas with minimum 75 mm overlap. Lay separation layer
(polyethylene sheet) over waterproofing membrane prior to application of protection
board and other materials.

E. On vertical areas, apply the waterproofing membrane fully bonded laid torch applied
fixed to walls with minimum 75 mm overlap. Use waterproofing manufacturer's standard
materials. Apply protection board prior to backfilling.
F. For the application of waterproof lining, follow manufacturer's written instructions.
G. Submit 10 years guarantee for the waterproofing works done and the associated works
covering the failure of materials or workmanship. Guarantee shall be signed by
