How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife is a fiction written by Manuel

Estabillo Arguilla in 1940. The story begins with Baldo giving a ride to Leon
with his wife, Maria, to their family home. Leon was nostalgic and sentimental as
they traveled around the province, Barrio Nagrebcan in La Union. Meanwhile,
Maria, being a city woman, felt unfamiliar with the area but still embraced it to
respect her husband’s hometown. The younger brother, Baldo, seems to be planning
something as he took another route instead of the easier way to the house. Their
journey became rougher with the bumpy road, tall grass, and sounds of the
insects, but Maria only noticed the beauty of the place. Maria’s only worry is
that Leon’s father might not like her. Baldo turns out to be a spy for the head
of the family, testing if Maria will be comfortable in their abode by going on
another uneven route while riding Labang, their carabao. The author did not
pinpoint the purpose of the story in the beginning like most books do. Thus, it
will make you wonder what the plot is all about.

This is a good book to read in one sitting, especially for people who are
starting to venture out into old literature because the words used and the
construction of the sentences are deep. It has a complete plot within a few pages
about vanilla semi-romance and slice of life. However, readers who like modern
romance with heart-fluttering lines and a subtly predictable twist would not like
this composition. But I personally think that it is classic literature because
the author is successful in making me think and realize the lessons and reasons
behind the book in just a few sentences at the end.

The event took place in Barrio Nagrebcan in La Union which perfectly suited
the plot without making it look unrealistic. Each character has their own
upbringing, which unconsciously answers questions by the reader by showing the
relationships of the mentioned people, like ‘How and where did Leon and Maria
meet?’ and ‘Why did they have to test Maria if she could survive living with
them?’

It was not officially stated what the story is about, which makes the
readers ponder what will happen next. But the flow of the story is clear and will
surely lead to the desired answers. And that being the closest to the twist, the
revelation of the purpose of the characters’ journey through a bumpy road on a
carabao.

Maria did end up leaving Baldo and his family with a good impression because
of her willingness to leave her old city life for a moment to live with them and
Leon in an isolated, rural place. This is also the moral lesson of the story,
based on my perspective. People will end up contemplating giving up their
familiar lifestyle for something or someone. The story shows that we should
embrace it if it is worth the struggle.

Not all people are born to like this piece of literature, but it is a good
composition because it contains all the intentions of the author through his
talent for being linguistic without having irrelevant and unnecessary events
added to the story.
