LESSON 5

THE CHURCH: The People of God

All who believe in Christ and are
baptized become members of the
Church, God’s new people. As a
community and in each of her members,
the church must make visible God’s love
which is fully revealed in Christ. The
church must continue to bring worship to
God as community and in each of her
members. It is in this lesson, we discover
more about the Church as people of
God.
KNOWING THE MESSAGE

PEOPLE OF GOD
But you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a
people of his own, so that you may announce the praises ”of him who
called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were
“no people “but you are God’s people; you had not received mercy
“but now you have received mercy.
The people of God

The image of the people of God

refers to the reality that God
chosen the single people from
among all the various peoples.

For you are the holy people to the Lord our God; the Lord your
God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special
treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. The Lord
did not set his love on you nor choose you because you were
more in number than any other people, for you were the least of
all the peoples; but because the Lord loves you, and because
He would keep the oath which we swore to your fathers” (Deut.
7:6-7)
The history of Israel is founded on God freed from bondage of Egypt and brought them into the
promised land.
It was to this people that He sent His Son and God become Man.

The Church as “People of God” (Vat.II ). It

means that the Church is a community of the
people gathered by God to continue the
salvation He worked through Jesus Christ.

The Church holds a special

relationship with
 GOD
 HER ORIGIN WAS
 LIFE
 DESTINY

St. Peter emphasized that baptized Christians share in the life of the risen Lord
who calls them to a life of
FAITH
HOPE
LOVE
a life of thanksgiving sacrifice and service.

“PEOPLE OF GOD” Emphasizes two important aspects of the
Church: Human and Historical --- people of God developed during
human history. God enters in the process of human history and
shares the people’s agonies and longings through Jesus Christ.
Communitarian -- to be communion with God and participation in
the life and mission of the Church.

People of God is the most celebrated

image of the Church. God has willed to
make men holy and saved them. A
people which acknowledge Him in Truth
and serves Him in holiness. “ (LG 9)

WHY THE CHURCH

IS
COMMUNITARIAN?
it is through the communal nature of God’s call to and work of holinesss and
salvation, on how God chooses to sanctify and saves us as a “people”. we
read that “God does not make men holy and save them merely as individual,
without bond or link between one another. rather has it pleased him to bring
men together as one people, a people who aknowledges him in truth and
serves him in holiness” (LG,9)

the fundamental images of the Church, in scriptures and in

Vatican II as People of God and body of Christ, demand that
pastors and lay faithful collaborate in the diffusion and
sanctification of the whole Church. Christ’s redemption is carried
out not only by the pastoral activity of the individual priest, but by
all the members of the -Church. the laity together with the clergy -
hierarchy and religious constitutes the Lord’s Comunity of
Disciples. The laity is never meant to have only a passive function
(PCP II,411).
the dealings of God with His chosen people were an
introduction, prepration and a figure of his ultimate self-
revelation and New Covenant in Christ Jesus. This New
Covenant, or New Testament, was and established in the
Blood of Christ, the price of our salvation. Christ himself is the
head of this messianic people, in whom the Holy Spirit dwells,
who are to abide by the new commandment to love as Christ
loves.
SEVEN CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD’S PEOPLE (CCC,782).
definite characteristics distinguished this People of God from
every other group in history:
(1) Cause is God: The People of God are not the property of
any one people group,
(2) Membership comes from faith in Christ and Baptism,
those who believe in Christ,
(3) Head is Christ: Christ shares with them his anointing of
the Spirit,
(4) the dignity is to be children of God because God’s Spirit
dwells within,
(5) the law is to love others as Christ loved them (jn. 13:34)
christ’s new commandment of love,
(6) the mission is to be the “salt of the earth and light of the
world,”a hope for the whole human race, and
(7) the destiny is the Kingdom of God, in time and eternity.
in the cathecism of the catholic Church (783-786), there are three offices of
Christ.
• PRIEST
• PROPHET
• KING
every member has these three offices and carries thier responsibilities.
by baptism believers are consecrated into a
“holy priesthood (Heb. 5:1-5) they share in
Christ’s prophetic office by adhering
unfailingly to the truths given to the saints.
they share in Christ’s royal office by serving
the poor and the suffering. “the sign of the
crosss makes kings of all those reborn in
Christ and the anointing of the Spirit
concsecrates them as priests”(Pope Leo the
Great).
Ever since God spoke to Abraham, He has been at work among mankind to bring
them back to Him. He choose Israel to be His special people through whom He
would prepare the world to receive His final word. Jesus was not only the final word
of God to man, but also the perfect human response to God’s word. Therefore, in
Christ God called a new people together in whom He could fulfill His promises.

we may not forget that we are the

Church. through our baptism we
become members of Jesus Christ’s
body. through our participation in any
religious activities especially the
Eucharist. we express our desire to be
totally re-united with God through Christ
our savior. As God’s people, we are
called to be prophets, to proclaim the
glorious works of God, The good
salvation.
God wanted us to gather as a people, to be communion with Him.
He wishes to save us not as individuals without link with each other
but as people who are related in the Spirit of Christ, in the fellowship
of Him and with one another. God saves by building a community.
God is a great community builder. Our salvation then involves
insertion into a community that reflects the communion of the
Trinitarian God.
This communitarian aspect also stresses participation in the life and
mission of the Church. We are called to fellowship as we share our
gifts and charisms in doing functions in the Church. Our personal
commitment si to be active members of God’s People who recieves
the same spirit in Baptism and Confirmation and sustained in the
Holy Eucharist.
“The newness of Christian life is the foundation
and title of the equality of all baptized in Christ, of
all members of the people of God”. said Pope John
Paul II. As members of God’s people, we share
responsibility for the Church’s mission. All are
responsible for the building up of the Church. This
responsibility is a great importnace to be entrusted
to us baptized Christians (PCP II, 409-410)
