1. Ahmedabad University has launched the “Climate Institute” to address the challenge of
climate change and environmental degradation in the Global South, focusing on 3 key aspects
of research, education and impact. The Institute is developing India’s 1st comprehensive Climate,
Energy, and Environmental education programme, preparing future leaders to tackle global
climate issues. The Institute operates across 3 verticals: ‘Energy and Climate Change’, ‘Cities and
Settlements’, and ‘Air and Water’. The Climate Institute will serve as a platform for global
research collaboration, hosting partnerships with universities from America, Europe, and Asia. Notable collaborations
include the University of Chicago setting up an Energy Policy Institute at the Institute also aims to drive impact by fostering
climate-tech startups in partnership with Social Alpha. It will also work closely with Central and State governments while
contributing to international reports from the IPCC and the United Nations. The Institute is founded under the leadership of
Dr Balaji Srinivasan as the Founding Executive Director and Professor Minal Pathak as the Academic Director. The initial key
research areas are led by Professor Pathak for the ‘Cities and Settlements’ vertical, Professor Anant Sudarshan for ‘Energy
and Climate Change’, and Professor Aditya Vaishya for ‘Air and Water’. Ahmedabad University was recently awarded the
‘Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Platinum Rating’ for its sustainable campus and has been recognised in the ‘Times
Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings’ for its leadership in climate action. The University’s ‘Arboretum’ project, initiated
in 2018, has grown into a thriving mini-urban forest with more than 1,500 trees, contributing to the city’s vital ‘green lungs.’

2. Electronic Payment and Services (EPS) has become the 5th company to receive a license to operate
white-label ATMs (WLAs) in semi-urban and rural regions of India, marking the 1st such approval in a
decade. The company plans to deploy 9,000 WLAs nationwide within 3 years under the brand name ‘EPS
Bancs’. Currently, there are 5 WLA operators in India: (i) EPS, (ii) India1 Payments, (iii) Hitachi Payment
Services, (iv) Tata Communications Payment Solutions, and (v) Vakrangee. The WLAs are set up, owned, and operated by
non-bank entities and authorized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to improve ATM access in underserved regions.
Customers using WLAs have a similar experience to using bank-owned ATMs, with the ability to perform transactions like
cash withdrawals, balance inquiries, and PIN changes. Banks pay WLA operators a fee for these transactions, similar to the
fees they pay when customers use other banks’ ATMs. {Read more}

3. Sohan Lal Commodity Management (SLCM), India’s largest post-harvest logistics and agri-solutions company, has
announced a strategic partnership with Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bandhan Bank to provide ‘Unified Collateral
Management Solutions,’ aimed at facilitating post-harvest credit for farmers and agricultural stakeholders at competitive
rates across the country. Under this partnership, SLCM will utilise its proprietary technology, ‘Agri Reach,’ to enhance the
efficiency of post-harvest credit and storage services for both banks. The ‘Agri Reach’ platform is recognised for reducing

4. Google has announced a partnership with Aditya Birla Finance, and Muthoot Finance, to offer
personal loans and gold-backed loans, respectively, during the 10th edition of its flagship ‘Google
for India’ event. This collaboration aims to improve access to credit and provide loans starting at
Rs 10,000 ($120) to support the financial needs of individuals and merchants in India. A report
published by HSBC highlighted that approximately 1 billion individuals in India invest around Rs 1 lakh crore each year on

5. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has reduced the first-year agent commission from 35% to
28%. These changes follow new surrender value norms issued by the Insurance Regulatory and
Development Authority of India (IRDAI), effective October 1, aimed at enhancing payouts to
policyholders who exit early. The new special surrender value norms under the IRDAI guidelines
mean that policyholders who exit prematurely after paying only the first-year premium will
receive a small payout, unlike the previous norm where exiting early meant forfeiting the entire premium. {Read more}

7. Nima Rinji Sherpa, 18-year-old Nepalese mountaineer, has set a new record becoming the
youngest climber to conquer all 14 of the highest peaks on Earth. With this accomplishment,
he joined an elite group of mountaineers who have successfully climbed all 14 of the world’s
“eight-thousanders,” or mountains recognised by the International Mountaineering and
Climbing Federation (UIAA) for being more than 8,000 meters above sea level. Rinji, who
embarked on his high-altitude climbing career at 16, managed to accomplish this feat in just
740 days. On June 16, 2024, Rinji Sherpa raised the flag of the Mumbai Indians, an IPL team, atop the third-highest peak in
the world. Previously, Mingma Gyabu “David” Sherpa submitted all 14 mountains by the age of 30 in 2019, according to
Guinness World Records. The 14 highest peaks are Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), Mount Lhotse
(8,516 m), Mount Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), Mount Gasherbrum I (8,068 m), Mount Gasherbrum II (8,035 m), Mount Broad
Peak (8,047 m), Mount Cho-Oyu (8,188 m), Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mount Annapurna (8,091 m), Mount Makalu (8,485

11. The 23rd Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) was held in
Islamabad, Pakistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation at the summit. The meeting was chaired
by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. S Jaishankar signed 8 outcome documents during the summit. The summit

13. The World Health Organization (WHO) has secured $1 billion in pledges for its next
budget, spanning 2025-28. Nearly $700 million of this was made in terms of new funding
commitments from various European countries, foundations, and organisations. Meanwhile,
$300 million was made up from reaffirmed funding commitments. The funding was
announced during the ‘WHO Investment Round Signature Event’, held at the World Health
Summit in Berlin, co-hosted by Germany, France, and Norway. Key contributors to WHO’s funding included Germany,
committing nearly $400 million over 4 years, with $260 million in new voluntary funding. Wellcome, a UK-based charitable
foundation, pledged $50 million, while the Institute for Philanthropy, Resolve to Save Lives, and the World Diabetes
Foundation committed $10 million each. The WHO Foundation also made a significant pledge of $50 million, drawing on
support from the private sector. Additionally, India, the 6th largest global contributor of core funding to the WHO, has now
committed to give more than $300 million for the WHO’s core programme of work from 2025 to 2028. The biggest chunk of
$250 million will be spent on the ‘WHO Centre of Excellence for Traditional Medicine’. India has committed the largest
amount of funds so far in Southeast Asia. Apart from the traditional medicine centre, $38 million is being given for new
premises for WHO’s regional office, $10 million for digital health, and $4.6 million for thematic funding. {Read more}

14. India signed the ‘Host Country Agreement (HCA)’ with the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA)
to officially establish the Alliance’s Secretariat in India with a combination of Indian and
international staff. The agreement was signed by Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic
Relations) from the Ministry of External Affairs, and Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of
Petroleum and Natural Gas, who is currently serving as the Interim Director General of the
GBA. Additionally, the agreement grants GBA legal status, including privileges and immunities under the ‘United Nations
(Privileges and Immunities) Act of 1947’, facilitating the smooth execution of its functions while adhering to India’s laws.
The GBA was launched on September 9, 2023, during India’s G20 Presidency by the Indian Prime Minister and leaders of 8
other countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Italy, Mauritius, Singapore, the UAE, and the USA. Additionally, the
GBA seeks to attract investment into biofuel production, particularly for clean cooking. Since its launch, GBA’s membership

Africa (MEA) region to strengthen the regional defence systems. SKYBER will supply customised high-
performance UAV systems, while Sibia will manage local sales, service, customer relationships,
marketing efforts, and regional supply chain logistics. Additionally, during the ‘Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition
& Conference’ in Abu Dhabi, RITES Ltd, a Navratna PSU, signed an MoU with Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the
UAE National Rail Network, to develop railways and related infrastructure services in the UAE and the broader region. The
MoU was signed by Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, and Rahul Mithal, Chairman and Managing Director of RITES Ltd. The
partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both organisations to explore opportunities for collaboration in key areas such
