DEPUTY HEAD (ACADEMIC) JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Deputy Head (Academic - Whole School)


Line Manager: Head Master/Mistress

Purpose of Job
AISL Harrow Schools is going to open a new K-12 school dedicated to Hongkonger children in Qianhai, Shenzhen in
September 2023, with a Hong Kong curriculum leading to HKDSE and IBDP at senior secondary.

The successful candidates will be offered an employment package with competitive salary plus bonus, on campus
accommodation or accommodation allowance (or commuting allowance), medical insurance (including dependents)
and education allowance for children dependents. Interested applicants please apply on or before 2 December,

• Establish, evaluate and develop the strategic academic aims and standards of a Whole School ethos in partnership
with students, staff, governors, HIMS personnel and parents
• Be responsible for the academic progress of students
• Establish an innovative whole-school curriculum promoting excellence towards HKDSE and IB requirements, and
the development of the school’s values
• Be responsible for standards of teaching and learning, including the school’s CPD and Induction programme
• Establish means of robustly curriculum-coherent assessment, recording and reporting, and the creation of a range
of assessment data which can be analysed by stakeholders
• Play a key role within the school’s staff performance management and appraisal
• Undertake the management of development and action plans as required, including those for curriculum,
assessment, innovation and CPD
• Act as a Safeguarding Lead for the Whole School
• Support the Head Master/Mistress and Heads of School in regards to academic administrative issues arising from
health and safety matters
• Assist the Head Master/Mistress in establishing and maintaining a vibrant and thriving school
• Line manage the Early Years and Primary Year Group Coordinators, and Secondary Subject Leaders
• Quality assure all Early Years, Primary and Secondary academic programmesas required by the Board of
Governors or governmental authorities
• Assist the Head Master/Mistress in the quality assurance of learning components of the Boarding Programme
• Assist in leading the utility of educational software by all staff, specifically related to that which enhances and
supports the academic programme – for example, electronic platforms to enhance learning effectiveness, the
school timetable and student tracking/reports

Strategy and Direction


• Work with the Head Master/Mistress and Senior Leadership Team to provide strategic leadership to shape,
deliver and actively promote the environment and school culture that is consistent with the ethos and
expectations of the School
• Contribute to the development of the School’s overall learning strategy to ensure that students, staff and
parents all understand and subscribe to the School’s vision and values
• Monitor and ensure the effectiveness and integrity of all school policies and working procedures in the
learning domains (including professional development, academic administration, curriculum leadership,
gifted education and SEN support), which are created, updated and implemented consistently with the
Harrow ethos and expectations

Administration and Infrastructure


• Lead and coordinate with key leaders across the school for synergy in learning, teaching, curriculum and
assessment
• Ensure clear and efficient policies and procedures of the learning and teaching domain are in place within a
safe, transparent and compliant framework and are tracked and updated in accordance with the policy review
schedule
• Support the Heads of School in the day-to-day running of both schools
• Manage and liaise with Heads of School in producing and managing student supervision rotas
• Contribute actively towards the planning-implementation-evaluation mechanisms of policies and strategies,
knowledge management, judgements and decisions made in the Senior Leadership Team
Communications and Public Relations
• Actively establish good relations with parents and all other visitors to the school
• Present a coherent and accurate account of the school’s academic performance in formats appropriate to a
range of audiences
• Oversee the organisation of and attend parents’ evenings, introduce policies and answer questions about
academic matters and be available to meet or arrange relevant teachers to meet parents as required
• Oversee the production of term-based assessment reports, working with Deputy Head (Pastoral), the Heads
of Phase and Key Stage Leaders and ICT Services.
• Communicate closely with parents and ensure that students’ academic progress is regularly reported, and
relevant data is always available
• Support and attend all major school events, always making an effort to contribute towards the improvement
of student learning in such events
• Work to maintain effective partnerships with the community, promoting and representing the school at local,
Greater Bay Area, national and international levels
• Operate effective communication channels throughout the school, especially within and across academic
units, in establishing a ‘Whole School ethos’
• Work with the Heads of School in coordinating transition programmes for students between phases

Requirements
Education, training and qualifications
• Appropriate degree, with HK PGDE, or other teaching qualification giving HK Teacher Registration status
• Evidence of relevant and challenging continuing professional development
• Qualifications in fields that add value to leadership in learning, educational management, etc.
• Working experience and knowledge of the HKDSE Curriculum of Hong Kong at class teaching, subject
department leadership, and marking public examination assessment levels, with experience in HKDSE public

Knowledge and experience


• At least 5 years of teaching experience
• At least 3 years of senior leadership experience involving most if not all of the following:
o Leading or coordinating teams in relation to academic or pastoral matters
o Effective planning and coordination of co-curricular activity programmes
o Managing performance of staff, especially senior or middle level managers
o Highly effective relationship management with a variety of stakeholders

the line manager to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description. This job description may be
amended at any time following discussion between the line manager and member of staff, and will be reviewed annually during
the appraisal process, and will be varied in the light of the business needs of the school.
