Elon Musk's Plans for a City on Mars
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has long promised to make humanity interplanetary by
establishing a permanent outpost on Mars. With the help of his space company's gigantic
Starship rocket, the mercurial entrepreneur wants to ensure the "long-term survival of
consciousness" by ferrying a million settlers to permanent (1) ________________ on the
Red Planet by 2050. But his lofty plans for a highly risky space colony over 100 million
miles away from home could be (2) ________________ from the start.
As biologist and author Kelly Weinersmith and her husband, cartoon artist Zach
Weinersmith, detail in their painstakingly researched 2023 book "A City on Mars: Can We
Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?" the planet is
a terrible choice for a settlement. In fact, they predict, the effort could rapidly devolve into
a drawn-out and (3) ________________ of epic proportions.
In a new interview with CNN, the pair elaborated on their newfound skepticism. "The
more we got into it — by year two out of the four-year research process, we were like, OK,
there’s a lot of stuff we don’t know that we still need to figure out," Kelly told the
broadcaster. "And if we do this soon, it could be an ethical catastrophe." "No way that you
could scale up to a million people on Mars without something catastrophic (4)
______________," she continued, "either in terms of it turns out we can’t have babies up
there, and moms and babies are dying or getting cancer." "If you want to do this, it’s got to
be the slow work of generations to build up to a point where we could be self-sustaining
on Mars," she added. In the short-term, however, the Red Planet could prove a great place
for "lots of research," according to Kelly. "Maybe in our lifetime, we’ll see people land on
Mars, do some exploration and come home, that could happen, but I don’t think we’re
going to have babies on Mars," she said.
Reproduction in particular could be a major problem due to the planet's immense
amount of space radiation exposure. The effects of microgravity in space — or just 38
percent of Earth's gravity (5) _______________ the surface of Mars — could also be a major
complicating factor. "We were just surprised by how many problems we thought we had a
handle on," Kelly told CNN. "But it turns out that we have very little relevant data for how

adults will do, let alone how (6) _______________ babies would work out." The authors'
concerns closely echo other experts who have criticized Musk's plans for colonizing Mars.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is the development of computer systems that can carry out
tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as interpretation and decision-
making. Using complex mathematical rules called Algorithm; AI enables machines to
process large amounts of information and imitate real human brain functions. The
amazing accuracy and efficiency of AI have resulted in its widespread use in a variety of
areas, and there are already (1) ________________ different applications for the technology.
Nowadays, AI-powered robots are becoming increasingly common. Industrial robots,
(2) _______________, are widely used to perform tasks related to manufacturing like
painting and product assembly. Experts have said that these robots are designed to work
with a high level of accuracy and speed, which improves (3) ________________ in factories.
There are also AI-equipped rescue robots that can be used to help save lives in emergency
situations. These machines can make intelligent choices to avoid obstacles in dangerous
environments. This makes them perfect for use in disaster zones.
At the same time, AI is also being used to power (4) ________________ that help us in
our daily lives. Private digital assistants, for example, can understand and respond to
users' voice commands, which makes them useful for simple tasks like looking up
information online and scheduling appointments. AI-powered navigation apps can use
real-time data processing to help us find the quickest and most efficient routes to our (5)

that can provide users with nutrition recommendations based on their specific needs. In
this way, AI is changing our routines and personal habits.
AI is a rapidly developing technology that is not only (6) _______________ industries
but also changing our daily lives and doing tasks that used to be considered impossible for
machines. In the years to come, we can surely expect more innovative and amazing AI
applications.

University of Leeds-led scientists _________________ say that neuroscientific theories
of how the brain makes decisions can be used in automated vehicle technology to improve
safety and make them more human-friendly.
The researchers set out to determine whether a decision-making model called drift
diffusion could predict when pedestrians would cross a road in front of approaching cars,
and __________________. This prediction capability will allow the autonomous vehicle to
communicate more effectively with pedestrians, in terms of its movements in traffic and
any external signals such as flashing lights, to maximize traffic flow and decrease
uncertainty.
Drift diffusion models assume that people reach decisions after accumulation of
sensory evidence up to a threshold _______________.
Professor Gustav Markkula, from the University of Leeds' Institute for Transport
Studies and the senior author of the study, said: "When making the decision to cross,
_________________, not only relating to the vehicle's distance and speed, but also using
communicative cues from the vehicle in terms of deceleration and headlight flashes.
"________________, pedestrians will often feel quite uncertain about whether the car is
actually yielding, and will often end up waiting until the car has almost come to a full stop
before starting to cross. Our model clearly shows this state of uncertainty borne out,
meaning it can be used to help design how automated vehicles behave around pedestrians
in order to limit uncertainty, which in turn can improve both traffic safety and traffic flow.
"It is exciting to see that these theories from cognitive neuroscience can be brought into
this type of real-world context and find an applied use."
