his education at the military school in Paris and joined the French artillery as a Sub-lieutenant at the age
of 17 (1785).

Napoleon Bonaparte's Rise to Power:

The first stage
a)Gained the rank of Brigadier: In 1793, England blockaded the port of Touloun in France. Napoleon
recovered the port of Touloun with great skill. As a reward for this success he was promoted to the rank
of Brigadier.

b)Gained the rank of Major General : On October 5, 1795, pro-monarchist and anti-republican rioters
attacked the National Convention. Napoleon defended the members of the National Convention from
the onslaught of this great mob with a small number of soldiers. As a reward, he was promoted to the
rank of Major General.

c)Napoleon's Italian campaign: On 26 October 1795, the rule of the National Convention ended and the
rule of the Directory began. At this time England, Austria and Sardinia were still at war.

*Conquest of Sardinia: Napoleon marches troops into Italy to fight against this alliance.First he defeated
Sardinia and forced a treaty and captured Savoy and Nice.

*Treaty of Campo Formio with Austria : He defeated Austria in Northern Italy. The Emperor of Austria
was forced to sign the Treaty of Campo Formio with him in 1797 A.D.

* Egyptian campaign against England: Napoleon then went to Egypt to fight against England. He won the
Battle of the Pyramids but was defeated by the English commander Nelson at the Battle of Niles in 1798
A.D. He then returned to France.

The second stage:

*End of Directory Rule Beginning of Consulate Rule: The people of France were dissatisfied with the
Directory Rule (1795-1799 AD). Taking advantage of this situation, Napoleon announced the end of
Directory rule and under Napoleon's leadership the Consulate rule in France began (November 9, 1799
AD). Three consuls were empowered to rule. Among them, Napoleon was the all-powerful First Consul.

*Consul for life : Taking over the country as the first consul of France, Napoleon resisted the attacks of
the Second Coalition against France. Then Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and other countries
were occupied. As a result of these successes on the recommendation of the 'Council of State' Napoleon
held the post of first and chief Consul for life in 1802 A.D.

The third stage:

*Emperor of the French: Finally, in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte through a plebiscite as proposed by the
Senate established himself as the 'Emperor of the French'. The French Republic transformed into the
French Empire under Napoleon.

Conclusion: Thus Napoleon Bonaparte became one of the greatest military commanders in France and
Europe at that time. He ruled from 1799 to 1814, therefore historians call his reign (1799-1814 AD) the
'Age of Napoleon' in European history.
