ENGLISH 8 REVISION FOR THE FIRST TERM TEST School year: 2024-2025 A. Vocabulary: Ss revise words related to the topic from Unit 1 to Unit 5. B. Grammar: 1/Verbs of liking / disliking + gerunds Verbs of liking / disliking + to-infinitives Some verbs of liking and disliking can be followed by gerunds only. Ex: They dislike surfing the net. Some are followed by both gerunds and to-infinitives. Ex: I love going / to go to the cinema. 2/ Comparative adverbs For most adverbs (often with two or more syllables), we make comparative forms by adding more. Ex: slowly → more slowly carefully → more carefully For adverbs that have the same forms as adjectives like fast, hard, soon, etc., we make comparative forms by adding -er. Ex: fast → faster hard→ harder Some irregular adverbs: well → better badly → worse 3/ Simple sentences and compound sentences A simple sentence is made up of one independent clause. Ex: Minh has some problems with his schoolwork. A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses, and they are joined by: -a coordinating conjunction: for, and, but, or, so. Ex: Mai bought many books, for she likes reading. -a conjunctive adverb: however, therefore, otherwise. Ex: Mark is hard-working; therefore, he usually gets high scores on exams. 4/ Yes/No questions: These questions need either a Yes or No answer. We form a Yes / No question with an auxiliary verb (be, do or have) or with a modal verb. We put the auxiliary verb or modal verb before the subject. Ex: Are you eating moon cakes? Yes, I am. Did they eat moon cakes at the festival last year? No, they didn't. Can he eat all these moon cakes? Yes, he can. We don't use an auxiliary verb when we use be as a main verb. Ex: Is that your Christmas present? Yes, it is. Wh/H-questions: There are seven Wh-questions and one H-question in English: what, which, where, when, who, whose, why and how. Question words and their auxiliaries are usually contracted in speech. Ex: Who is =Who's Who's coming to the festival? What will = What'll What'll they do there? 5/ Zero article Articles in English include a / an, the, and the zero article. Sometimes, we use nouns without a / an or the. We call this the zero article. We use the zero article - with uncountable or abstract nouns. Ex: Sugar is not good for your teeth. -when making general statements. Ex: Students should work hard. -when describing general forms of transport. Ex: We went there by boat. C. Pronunciation: Sounds from unit 1 to unit 5 D. Speaking I/ Introduce yourself.
