Activity (1)
Water electrolysis

Tools: 1. Hoffmann voltameter 2. acidified water 3.battary

Steps:
Put acidified water with sulphuric acid in hoffmann voltameter and connect it
to the battary

Observation:
Gases collected at the anode and the cathode of the voltameter.

Conclusion:
Water decomposes into its elements(hydrogen and oxygen) .
1.oxygen gas evolves at positive pole (Anode).
2.Hydrogen gas evolves at negative pole (cathode).

Activity (2)

Tools:
1. Ebonite rod 2. A piece of wool 3. Paper scraps

Steps:
1.Rub one end of an ebonite rod with a piece of wool,

2.Bring the rod close to lightweight pieces (Paper scrapes) or small foam
pieces.

Observation:
The paper scraps are attracted to the rod end.
Conclusion:
1. Rubbing ebonite with wool gives it static electricity (electrostatic) charges
so ebonite attracts paper scraps
2. The electric charges settle on the surface of the rubbed part of the
object only and don’t transfer to the rest of it
Static electricity is :
The charges that accumulate on the surfaces of objects when they
lose or gain electrons .

Activity (3)
Electrical forces

Tools: 1.Ebonite rod 2. Glass rod

Steps:
1.Rub two ebonite rods with a piece of silk and hang one of them
freely, then bring the other rod close to it.
Observation:
1.The free-moving rod moves away(repelled) from the fixed rod.
Conclusion:
1.Rubbing the ebonite rods with silk gave them the same negative
charges, leading to repulsion force between them .
Charging by rubbing(friction)

objects together.

Activity (4)
Electrical forces

Tools: 1.Ebonite rod 2. Glass rod

Steps:
1.Rub two glass rods with a piece of silk and hang one of them freely,
then bring the other rod close to it.

Observation:
The free-moving rod moves away (repelled) from the fixed rod.

Conclusion:
1.Rubbing the glass rod with silk gave them the same
positive charges, leading to repulsion force between them.

Activity (5)
Electrical forces

Tools: 1.Ebonite rod 2. Glass rod

Steps:
Hang the ebonite rod after rubbing it with a piece of silk, then bring
the glass rod, after rubbing it with silk, close to it.

Observation:
1.The free-moving rod moves closer (attracted) to the fixed rod.
Conclusion:
The charge formed on the ebonite rod when rubbed with piece of
silk is negative while the charge formed on the glass rod when
rubbed with the same piece of silk is positive, leading to the
attraction between them.

Activity (6)
Electroscope
Determine the type of charge on a charged object

Tools
1.Copper disc 2. Copper rod 3.glass container 4. Two gold leaves

Steps:
1.Charge the electroscope with a certain electric charge (negative charge).

2.ring the charge of the tested object close to the electroscope disc without
touching it

Observation:
1. Divergence increases
2. Divergence decreases

Conclusion:
1. If the gold leaves divergence increases: the charge of the tested object is
the same to the electroscope charge (negative Charge)
2. If the gold leaves divergence decreases the charge of the tested object is
the opposite to the electroscope charge (positive Charge) .

Activity (7)
Electroscope
To detect the electric state of an object

Tools
1.Copper disc 2. Copper rod 3.glass container 4. Two gold leaves

Steps:
1.Touch the metal disc of the electroscope with your hand
to ensure it is not charged by any electric charge.
2.Bring the objects to be tested close to the electroscope disc
(which is negatively charged) until it touches it.

Observation:
1. The leaves of electroscope diverge
2. The leaves of the electroscope don’t diverge

Conclusion:
1.If the leaves of electroscope diverge : the tested object is charged
2. If the leaves don’t diverge the tested object is not charged

Activity (8)
Properties of magnet

Tools
1. Bar magnet 2. Iron fillings
Steps
1. Insert abar magnet into iron fillings.
2. Hang a magnet freely from its middle using a silk thread until it settles .
Observation
1.Iron fillings are attracted to the magnet ,with the highest density at the
poles of the magnet
* The density of the fillings decreases as it gets closer to the middle of the
magnet.
2. A magnet always takes a certain direction (North -South Direction)
* The north pole of magnet(N) point towards the geographical north pole(N)
of the earth which is the the magnetic south pole (S) of the earth

materials?
Magnetic materials are: attracted to the magnet as(iron – cobalt – nickle –
steel)
Non magnetic materials are not attracted to the magnet as (copper – gold –
aluminium – silver )
