It was eight o’clock in the evening. I arrived at Heathrow Airport with my family a few
minutes ago and we were very tired after the long flight. We then went to a hotel in London and spent
a couple of days before decided to travel to Dublin. some friends of ours told us to get a taxi to our
hotel, so we went to look for one. The airport was very bright and modern, but when we came out, we
found we were in a dark area of car parks and bus stations. We didn’t see that taxi space anywhere, so
we asked an old man. However, he didn’t speak English. Suddenly a big, friendly man came up to us
and said, “Give me your cases. I’ll take them to the taxi space for you.” I told him our cases were not
heavy and we could take them, too. But he just picked up my wife’s case and told us to follow him.
When we reached the taxi space, he put the cases down and asked me to give hime ten
pounds. I was very surprised. Ten pounds seemed very funny for just walking a hundred yards with
32
one not very heavy case. But I was too tired and I didn’t want to argue. I took out my wallet.
However, I only had a fifty-pound note and I told him so. He said, “No problem. Give me the note
and I will ask a taxi driver the change it for you.” He took my note and disappeared round the corner.
And of course, he never came back.

Last week I made the mistake of visiting the village where I grew up. It was a small, friendly
community with two farms and a number of old cottages round the village green. I realized very
quickly that although in many ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same. All
the pretty cottages are there, of course, and both the picturesque farmhouses. But none of the
inhabitants are country people. All of them are commuters, who leave early every morning for the
nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the land has been sold and is
managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village itself. There are a
few new houses, but they have no local character; you can see the same style anywhere in the
country. The whole of the village, in fact, has been tidied up so much that it has become nothing more
than just another suburb.
