ELL Development 2

Course Description:

ELL Development 2 focuses on developing essential language skills that students need to
function in daily life and at school. This course is designed as a follow-up to ELL Development
1 and as a prerequisite for ELL Development 3. Students will be given opportunities to improve
their reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening skills. A main focus will be developing a
positive attitude towards language learning. Students will be expected to use English at all times
in the classroom.

Course Content:

Writing

Required skills will be developed through various writing assignments, journaling, grammar
exercises, and practice.

Oral Work

Both informal and formal speaking opportunities will be offered to refine public speaking
techniques.

Reading

Silent reading will occur for the first 20 minutes of every class. Students will also be asked to
read and demonstrate comprehension skills on a regular basis.

Class expectations:

 All students are expected to be respectful of everyone in the classroom. Inappropriate


language and behaviour will not be tolerated. This includes unwanted physical contact,
offensive or discriminatory language, and disruptive actions.
 STUDENTS WILL SPEAK ENGLISH AT ALL TIMES IN THIS CLASSROOM.
STUDENTS WHO SPEAK OTHER LANGUAGES WILL BE WARNED THEN SENT TO
THE OFFICE. REPEAT OFFENCES WILL RESULT IN WARNINGS SENT HOME
AND TO THE HEAD INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS.
 Attendance is vital for success in this course. If you have to miss class please have your
parent/guardian call or e-mail the school and provide a reason for your absence.
 Please be on time. If you are late please enter the class without disturbing the class.
 Turn off your cell phone before class.
 You must bring your binder, lined paper, blue or black pens, and the textbook being used to
every class. Work in pencil will not be accepted.
 Participation in class is vital. Come to class ready to talk!
 If you miss a quiz or test it is YOUR responsibility to set up an alternate time with me.
 If you miss class it is YOUR responsibility to catch up on missed work.
 You are expected to do all in-class and homework assignments as well as reviewing in your
spare time.
 Textbooks must be returned promptly once the unit is finished. Textbooks are shared
between many classes!
 Marks will be available and updated regularly online. You should utilize this tool and
encourage your parents/guardians to do the same.

Academic Misconduct:

Cheating and plagiarism is:

 copying from a classmate, a book, or the Internet


 someone else doing your assignment for you
 any instance in which you take credit for someone else’s work
 using a translator to do all your writing and directly copying definitions

Any student caught plagiarizing will get a zero on the assignment and administration will be
notified. Students who “share” their individual work with friends will also receive zero.

Please come see me or e-mail me when you need help. Ask for help early; do not wait for
problems to pile up!
