ANCIENT OLYMPICS
The Olympic Games are an international sports festival that began in
ancient Greece. They were held in honor of Zeus, and the Greeks gave
them a mythological origin. The original Greek games were staged
every fourth year for several hundred years, until they were abolished
in the early Christian era. The earliest reliable date that recorded
history gives for the first Olympics is 776 B.C. The revival of the
Olympic Games took place in 1896, and since then they have been
staged every fourth year, except during World War I and World War II
(1916, 1940, 1944).
MODERN OLYMPICS
The Olympic Games are the leading international sporting events featuring summer
and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world
participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the
world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The
Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer
and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period. The evolution has
resulted in many changes in the Olympic games, the creation of the Winter Olympic
Games for snow and ice sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities,
the Youth Olympic Games for athletes aged 14 to 18, the five Continental games
(Pan American, African, Asian, European, and Pacific), and the World Games for
sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The Games have grown so much
that nearly every nation is now represented. This growth has created numerous
challenges and controversies, including boycotts, doping, bribery, and terrorism. Every
two years the Olympics and its media exposure provide athletes with the chance to
attain national and sometimes international fame. The Games also provide an
opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to the world.
