Key Words: Reading Skill, Silent Reading Technique, The Jakarta Post
The ability to read is one of the crucial skills in learning languages, especially English. The ability to read
is very emphasized in the world of education because to get the point of a material, students are required to read and
understand the reading text. The ability to read in English is one level more difficult than reading texts in Indonesian
because it requires mastery of vocabulary. In fact, many students have difficulty in understanding an English reading
because they have limited vocabulary, reading materials, and motivation to read. Based on this case, researcher was
interested in conducting a study of the Silent Reading technique on students’ Reading in learning process because
there are many benefits to the technique such as increasing motivation, concentration, enjoying the reading process,
and students' understanding. The researcher conducted research on reading materials suitable for students and
found an English newspaper, The Jakarta Post. The Jakarta Post is a local newspaper served in English. Besides,
there are many genres in this newspaper. The genre that suits the student's major is Multimedia which the articles
will make students more enthusiastic about reading. This study aims to determine the implementation and response
of students to reading using silent reading techniques at SMKN 1 Tambelangan, Sampang. The sample of this study
were students of class 2 Computer Network Engineering. The approach used to collect the required data is a
qualitative approach. The results of this study are students find it easier to understand reading material, enjoy the
reading process, improve understanding, concentration, and add new vocabulary.

Kemampuan membaca adalah salah satu kemampuan yang krusial dalam mempelajari Bahasa Bahasa,
khususnya Bahasa inggris. Kemampuan membaca sangat ditekankan dalam dunia Pendidikan karena untuk
memahami suatu materi siswa diharuskan membaca serta memahami teks bacaan. Kemampuan membaca dalam
Bahasa inggris menjadi satu tingkat lebih susah dibandingkan membaca teks dalam Bahasa indonesia karena perlu
penguasaan kosa kata. Kenyataannya, banyak siswa yang mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami suatu bacaan
bahasa inggris karena mereka keterbatasan kosa kata, bahan bacaan, serta motivasi untuk membaca. Berdasarkan
kasus tersebut, peneliti tertarik meneliti Teknik Membaca Silent Reading pada pembelajaran karena terdapat banyak
manfaat pada Teknik tersebut seperti peningkatan motivasi, konsentrasi, menikmati proses membaca, serta
pemahaman siswa. Peneliti melakukan penelitian tentang bahan bacaan yang sesuai dengan siswa dan menemukan
koran berbahasa inggris, The Jakarta Post. The Jakarta Post adalah koran lokal yang disajikan dalam Bahasa
inggris. Selain itu terdapat banyak genre dalam koran ini. Genre yang sesuai dengan jurusan siswa adalah
Mulitimedia yang mana artikelnya akan membuat siswa menjadi lebih bersemangat dalam membaca. Penelitian ini
bertujuan untuk mengetahui implementasi serta respon siswa terhadap membaca menggunakan Teknik membaca
senyap di SMKN 1 Tambelangan Sampang. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 2 Teknik Komputer
Jaringan. Pendekatan yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yang dibutuhkan adalah Pendekatan Kualitatif.
Hasil pada penelitian ini adalah siswa merasa lebih mudah memahami materi bacaan, menikmati proses membaca,
meningkatkan pemahaman, konstrasi, serta penambahan kosa kata baru.
