Phần 1: Quy tắc xác định trọng âm

Quy tắc chung về trọng âm trong tiếng Anh

 Trọng âm luôn được đánh ở nguyên âm thay vì phụ âm.
 Các tiền tố không nhận trọng âm.
Ex: re’write, im’possible, im’patient…
 Trọng âm không rơi vào những âm yếu/âm ngắn như /ə/ < /i/ < /u/.
Ex: computer /kəmˈpjuːtər/, occur /əˈkɜːr/,…

1. Trọng âm rơi vào ÂM TIẾT THỨ 1:

Quy tắc 1: Phần lớn danh từ và tính từ có hai âm tiết thì trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
 Danh từ: monkey /´mʌηki/, baby /’beibi/, center /ˈsentər/,…
Ngoại lệ: advice /ədˈvaɪs/, machine /məˈʃiːn/, mistake /mɪˈsteɪk/, hotel /həʊˈtel/,…
Chú ý:
- Một số từ 2 âm tiết sẽ có trọng âm khác nhau tùy thuộc vào từ loại.
Ex: ‘record (n), ‘desert (n) nhưng re’cord (v) /rɪˈkɔːd/; de’sert (v) /dɪˈzɜːt/,…
- Danh từ hay tính từ chứa nguyên âm dài ở âm tiết thứ 2 thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào chính âm tiết đó
Ex: belief /bɪˈliːf/, Japan /dʒəˈpæn/, correct /kəˈrekt/, perfume /pərˈfjuːm/, police /pəˈliːs/
 Tính từ: angry /´æηgri/, happy/ ˈhæpi/, nervous /ˈnɜrvəs/,…
Ngoại lệ: alone /əˈləʊn/, amazed /əˈmeɪzd/…

2. Trọng âm rơi vào ÂM TIẾT THỨ 2:

Quy tắc 2: Hầu hết động từ và giới từ có hai âm tiết thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai.
 Động từ: design /di´zain/, enjoy /ɪnˈdʒɔɪ/, include /ɪnˈkluːd/…
Nhưng: Một số động từ 2 âm tiết trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất nếu âm tiết thứ hai là âm ngắn.
Ex: enter /ˈentər/, ‘travel /’trævl/, answer /ˈɑːn.sər/, happen /ˈhæp.ən/, offer /ˈɒf.ər/, open /ˈəʊ.pən/,
visit /ˈvɪz.ɪt/…
 Giới từ: between /bɪˈtwiːn/, among /əˈmʌŋ/…

3. Trọng âm rơi vào ÂM TIẾT LIỀN TRƯỚC:

Quy tắc 3: Từ có tận cùng là 2 nguyên âm đi liền nhau thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết liền trước nó.
Chú ý: xét chữ cái đầu tiên của hậu tố và chữ cài đứng trước hậu tố đó (Ex: ious, – iar, – ience, –
eous, – ian)
Ex: musician, delicious, proverbial…

Quy tắc 4: Trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết liền trước các hậu tố sau:
+ ic (infor’matic), ical (i’dentical), ics (eco’nomics)
+ ion (ex’tension, pro’tection) => Ngoại lệ: television
+ ity (possi’bility), ety (so’ciety)
+ logy (bi’ology), logist (bi’ologist)
+ graphy (pho’tography), grapher (pho’tographer)

4. Trọng âm rơi vào các đuôi sau:

Quy tắc 5: Các từ có hậu tố sau sẽ có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đó
ee (employ’ee), eer (engin’eer), ese (Chin’ese), oo (bam’boo), oon (ba’lloon), teen (four’teen), ever
(however, whatever), self (herself, myself)…

5. Trọng âm rơi vào ÂM TIẾT THỨ 3 TỪ DƯỚI LÊN:

Quy tắc 6: Các từ có hậu tố là – ate, –ise/ize, -fy, -ence, -gy/cy thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 từ
dưới lên
Ex: investigate /ɪnˈvestɪɡeɪt/, ‘delicate, ‘simplify, ‘modernize…
Ngoại lệ: e’xistence, o’ccurrence, de’pendence

Chý ý: Hậu tố không mang trọng âm

Các từ có hậu tố là – ment, – ship, – ness, – er/ or, – hood, – ing, – en, – ful, – able, – less thì trọng
âm chính của từ gốc không thay đổi.
Ex: agreement /əˈɡriːmənt/, meaningless /ˈmiːnɪŋləs/, reliable /rɪˈlaɪəbl/, poisonous /ˈpɔɪzənəs/,
happiness /ˈhæpinəs/,…
