array
A programmable logic array (PLA) is a kind of programmable logic device used t o implement
combinat ional logic circuit s. The PLA has a set of programmable AND gat e planes, which link t o a
set of programmable OR gat e planes, which can t hen be condit ionally complement ed t o produce
an out put . It has 2N AND gat es for N input variables, and for M out put s from PLA, t here should
be M OR gat es, each wit h programmable input s from all of t he AND gat es. This layout allows for
many logic funct ions t o be synt hesized in t he sum of product s canonical forms.

PLAs differ from programmable array logic devices (PALs and GALs) in t hat bot h t he AND and OR
gat e planes are programmable.[PAL has programmable AND gat es but fixed OR gat es]
