Report Question:

RQ:How Are Conflict Diamonds Affecting Global

Stability Today and in the Future?

Introduction: What is the Value of Diamonds?

Have you ever wondered about a diamonds worth if it was ever tampered
with Human Suffering? Diamonds have been a symbol of wealth and
luxury since the beginning of time, diamonds are valued for their beauty
and durability and they are really important in todays economy.
According to the TIME the diamond industry was worth $81.4 billion
dollars till 2014, employing 10 million people all around the world.
Russia, Botswana and Canada are the countries that have the most
benefits which contribute to economic development and growth. But a
sparkle of a diamond can never conceal the darker side of the diamond
buisness; conflict diamonds or blood diamonds, The National Museum
of American Diplomacy states(NMAD) that these diamonds are the
diamonds that “originate from areas controlled by forces or factions
opposed to legitimate or internationally recognized governments.” They
are mined in war zones and are sold to finance armed conflict against

governments, and consequences on global stability as they fuel violence,
corruption, and abuse human rights.

What is the process of Extracting these diamonds?

Diamonds are typically found deep under Earths mantle, they are
formed under intense heat and pressure over billions of years. They are
brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions and then mined. The
extraction of these diamonds is very labour intensive and even involves
child labor. This is also very environmentally destructive. The Global
Cleaning Waste Network highlights that “Blood Diamonds are more than
a humanitarian crisis- they are an environmental .”. The workforce,
often forced into labour under the control of armed rebel groups, uses
basic tools in extremely harsh conditions.

Conflict Diamonds and hows its related to international

disputes-

The trade of these conflict diamonds is a significant source of funding for

illegal rebel groups and warlords, especially in places like Sierra Leone,
Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These diamonds
are then sold to the black market where they use the earned money to
buy weapons and continue the conflicts. The struggle for control over
diamond-rich areas has led to widespread violence, severe human rights
abuses, forced labor, and the exploitation of child soldiers.

One of the most known incidents is linked to conflict diamonds is the

civil war in Sierra Leone from 1991-2002, which stands as an example of
how destructive these gems can be. There were around 113 Rebel groups,
but particularly the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), who used the
illegal trade of diamonds to supply their campaign against the

government, Britannica says “they claimed some 50,000 lives and
displaced approximately two million people.”. In response to the
atrocities, a scheme was established in 2003 known as the Kimberly
Process Certification Scheme(KPCS) with an aim at to prevent the trade
of conflict diamonds by certifying the origins of rough diamonds. While
the Kimberley Process has had some success in reducing the flow of
conflict diamonds, critics argue that it is still full of challenges. Issues
such as corruption, smuggling, and other things take over the
effectiveness of the initiative and reduce it.

Impact of Conflict diamonds globally, nationally and

locally
• Globally- Conflict diamonds undermine international peace and
security as they contribute to the destablisation of regions which
makes it difficult for nations have a sustainable environment. The
trade of these diamonds also affects the diamond markets because it
creates a parallel economy thats outside the control of the law.
• Nationally- The governments of these affected areas struggle to
maintain law and order which leads to corruption and weakened
economy. In Sierra Leone, the diamond trade fueled a civil war which
took the trust of the government.
• Locally- Communities in the diamond mining regions have to suffer
greatly as they bear very inhuman conditions. The environmental
degradation in these areas also causes instability in these areas which
further causes poverty and continues the cycle of poverty. And as
responsible people, we should also check the origins of the diamonds
we purchase.

The resolution, challenges and Future Outlook-

CONFLICT AND PEACE 3

While the Kimberly process has made a few changes, the challenges are
still standing strong. Loopholes in the certification process, the guardian
says, “The Kimberley Process has failed on its own terms: corruption and
smuggling are rife, and in the past few years, the system has begun to
unravel further from the inside.”, weak enforcement and the persistence
of the rebel groups are more reasons that the KPCS is struggling. Not
only that but KPCS can’t check polished diamonds.
To address these issues, the KPCS must be strengthened through
increased transparency and accountability. The collaboration between
NGOs and the government should also be increased. Moreover, efforts
should be made to go to the root causes of the conflict.
The rise of synthetic diamonds and increasing consumer demand for
ethically sourced products may push the market towards more
transparency and accountability. However, without sustained
international cooperation, the issue of blood diamonds is unlikely to
disappear entirely.

C0nclusion

The grave issue of blood diamonds is far more complex then what I first
imagined. And through the research I’ve done, it has made me more
conscious about my impact as a consumer can have a global impact. And
now I see and feel the importance of responsible consumption and I also
somewhat feel a strong sense of responsibility to advocate for ethically
sourced stuff from all around the world. I’ve also come to realise that
change is possible but it requries collective determination. The future of
global stability depends on our ability to address the challenges posed by

conflict diamonds with hardwork, determination and a vision to solve
the problem together!..
