a) When the initial velocity of a projectile is doubled for a given angle
of projection, , the horizontal range will increase because the
projectile’s initial horizontal speed and time of flight both increase.
This effect is a result of the increase kinetic energy and longer
flight time allowing the projectile to cover a greater horizontal
distance before hitting the ground.

executing S.H.M are out of phase because they reach their
maximum and minimum values at different points during the

substance and maintenance of the oscillatory motion. This

i. Thermometric properties refer to the characteristic or
physical properties of a material that change
measurably with temperature 02 marks.
ii. High specific heat capacity. Water has a relatively high
specific heat capacity compared to many other fluids.
This means it can absorb and retain a significant
amount of heat without a substantial increase in its own
temperature. As a result, water is effective at absorbing
heat generated by the engine and helps maintain a
stable operating temperature 02 marks

(b)

i. Temperature gradient refers to the rate of change of

temperature with respect to distance or position in a
given medium or material 01mark
ii. The graph of the lagged and that of the polished rod
are similar since polishing prevents escape of the
heat in form of radiation.
For the lagged coated with soot or polished rod.
01mark

For the one with soot on the surface. 01mark

 A lagged rod will have a straight line indicating that

no heat is lost to the surrounding and so heat is
conducted/ transmitted uniformly. 01mark
 For the one coated with soot, is a good radiator of the
heat so heat is lost as it is conducted from the hot end
to the cold end hence the graph is the curve. 01mark
 For the polished one, this is similar to the lagged one.
A polished surface has a very low tendency of losing
heat. Hence the graph is straight line indicating the
flow of heat is uniform. 01mark

i. Earthquakes are measured using seismometers. The most common

scale for measuring magnitude is the Richter Scale 02 marks
. The focus(hypocentre) is the actual location where the earthquake
originates beneath the Earth’s surface, while the epicenter is the
point directly above the focus on the Earth’s surface 02marks
8. (a)
i. Transformer operation is based on electromagnetic induction to
transfer electrical energy between two coils. When an alternating
current flows through the primary coil, it creates a changing
magnetic field, inducing a voltage in the secondary coil.
 To step up voltage, a transformer with more secondary
windings than primary windings is used.
 To step down voltage, a transformer with fewer secondary
windings is used. 02 marks
ii. Efficiency in transformers refers to how effectively the transformer
converts electrical power from the primary coil to the secondary coil
without significant energy losses. It is expressed as a percentage and
can be calculated using the formula

 By employing more efficient transformers with

superior core materials and optimized winding
technique, the overall energy losses during power
distribution are reduced. This conservation of energy
translates to cost saving for electricity providers and
consumers leading to more sustainable and
economical electrical system. 03 marks

i. E.M.F is the maximum voltage a cell can provide when it’s

not connected to any circuit, while potential difference is the

when current is flowing. 02 marks

into a junction (or node) in a circuit is equal to the total
current flowing out that junction. 01 mark

i. In terms of energy band theory:
Insulators do not conduct electricity under ordinary conditions
because their valence electrons are tightly bound to their atoms,
forming a completely filled valence band. At room temperature, the
valence band is fully occupied and the energy gap between the
conduction bands is relatively large.
This large energy gap requires a substantial amount of energy to
promote electrons from the valence band to the conduction band,
which cannot be easily achieved under normal conditions. As a result
insulators lack free electrons in the conduction band necessary for
electrical conduction, making them poor conductors of electricity

ii. A semiconductor diode behaves as an open switch when it is reversed
biased. In a reverse-biased diode, the external voltage is applied in a
way that the positive terminal of the voltage source connects to the
diode’s-type semiconductor and the negative terminal connects to the
P-type semiconductor 01 mark

(b)

i. Breakdown voltage :
The breakdown voltage of a PN junction diode is the voltage at which
the diode experiences a rapid increase in reverse current and enters
the breakdown region. The phenomenon occurs when the reverse
bias voltage exceeds a critical value. 01 mark
Knee voltage (Cut –in Voltage)
The knee voltage of a PN junction diode is the voltage at which the
diode is the voltage at which the diode starts conducting in the
forward biased direction. It is the point where the diode begins to
allow current to flow through it with relatively low resistance. Before
the knee voltage is reached, the diode remains in a non-conducting
state. 01 mark

more input signals but they produce only one output 01 mark
ii. Two functions of logic gate are;
 Logic gates perform fundamental logical operations on
binary input signals, which are represented as 0s and 1s.

building blocks of digital circuits 01 mark

i. A NOT gate can be made using only one NAND gate. By connecting
the input of the NAND gate together, you can achieve the NOT
function. 01mark
ii. To implement a NOT gate using transistors, you can connect the
input to the base of an NPN transistor, and the output to the
collector of the same transistor. The emitter should be connected
to the ground. When the input is low (0), the transistor will be in
an ON state, and the output will be high (1). Conversely, when the
input is high (1), the transistor will be in an OFF state, and the
output will be low (0).This setup effectively creates a NOT gate.
