1 PURPOSE
This document describes the technical preparation and Instructions for conducting and reporting the more
generally applicable and acceptable test of Electric Motor.
Motor solo run test determines the performance and characteristics of Motors and checks by functional
testing that all components and devices operate, control and perform in accordance with approved design
01
documents. The general objective of this test is to verify the speed, vibration and direction of rotation of
motor. To ensure that during operation the motor is suitable for the service intended and installed properly.
And also this provides the baseline data for future evaluation of the motor during routine maintenance.

6.1 PRE-REQUISITES
In order to proceed for Motor Solo run test in an effective manner, the following pre-requisites need to be
met.
1. Prior to performing this test, verify that all circuit breakers, fuses, starters, and overload devices have been
01
properly sized, installed, and tested, as required.
2. Ensure that all construction check sheets / ITRs are signed for the equipment. Check motor properly
secured on the foundation.
3. Verify from Construction dept. that all circuit breakers, fuses, starters and overload devices have been
Installed and tested as per design. (attach duly completed construction document)
01
4. Ensure all safety materials and equipment (warning signs, barricades, fire extinguisher etc) must be in
place at work area.
5. Ensure that proper work permit has been accrued if applicable.
6. Keep the area barricaded and keep warning signs. If required based on site situation keep a fire
extinguisher handy. Ensure all persons working wear mandatory PPEs.
7. Ensure a set of approved drawing & manual are available at the station.
8. Ensure that Switchboard feeding the Power to motor is commissioned as per design. Also confirm by
verifying cable Tags.
9. Ensure that Motor is de-coupled from its driven equipment. (Coupling halves shall be tied back to prevent
the coupling halves from
10. Ensure Box-up of Motor (Main & Aux Terminal Boxes)
11. Ensure Box-up of Module & cable alley at Switchboard / Box at VFD end (As applicable).
12. Check if shaft is locked by vendor, unlock and make it ready for test.
13. Ensure free rotation of shaft, Do LLF test . Check the requirement of greasing and oiling. (remove grease
plug from one side of each bearing to allow for initial grease expansion). Attach the record.
14. Ensure Motor is properly grounded/earthed.
The list of temporary facilities and equipment for Motor Solo run test is as follows:

On completion of Motor installation including measuring instruments, canopy etc., proceed to the following
checks:
a) Check that respective switchboard is commissioned.
b) Check tightness of power and control cable termination
01 c) Check that the remote control circuits (start and stop) also cause the contactor to operate.
d) Check that all the motor protection relays cause the contactor to be de-energized
On completion of above checks, following testing activity shall be undertaken and reading to be filled in
Annexure- II (Opercom check sheet for MOTOR SOLO RUN TEST).
1. Verify by visual inspection or record check that the motor has been lubricated.
2. If possible, manually rotate the shaft and check for free rotation. Note any unusual noise or drag effects.
3. Positively confirm that the motor to be energized is connected to the correct controlling device (switch,
starter, or breaker) by verifying the cable tags.
4. Perform and evaluate an insulation resistance test in accordance with project test procedures.
5. Verify that the motor space heater (when installed) is energized when motor is de-energized.
6. Verify proper rotation of motor shaft by “bumping” the motor ON/OFF. Correct rotation if necessary by
exchanging two phases of the motor feed.
7. Start the motor and check for proper operation. Let the motor to run for a period of (4) hours. During the
test, check the motor for excessive vibration or temperature. Record current and voltage readings.

8. Motor no-load test shall be stopped if any abnormalities occurred which may damage the motor.
9. Where applicable, visually verify that the oil rings are properly distributing oil to the bearings.
10. Record and evaluate all the required data on attachments.
11. During operational testing, note any unusual noises or physical changes in the remarks section of the data
sheet.
12. Monitor and evaluate all bearing temperatures. Operate the motor until the bearing temperatures have
stabilized and record the readings.
13. MOTOR ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA will be checked a per results recorded on Annexure- II : Opercom
check sheet for MOTOR SOLO RUN TEST. Results will be compared with design documents based on
that motor acceptance will be judged.
