COURSE DESCRIPTION
Industry use of analytics and business productivity applications is critical to office workflows and evidence informed decision
making. This course introduces applied computing to develop skills in applications such as spreadsheet, word processing, and
database through the structured query language (SQL).

LEARNING OUTCOMES

OUTCOME Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to

1 Use spreadsheet application software in designing and developing workbooks to facilitate evaluation
and management of business issues

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Develop and manage a workbook containing text, graphics, numbers, formulas, functions, and
multiple sheets
• Examine and present worksheet data by creating appropriate charts, and by employing the
sorting, filtering, and summarizing features of spreadsheet tables
• Manipulate worksheet data using conditional formatting, pivot tables, trendlines, and various
advanced tools

2 Extract, transform, and explore data using database software

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Create, modify, and explore objects in a database including tables, queries, forms, and reports
• Populate, navigate and modify records in database tables
• Utilize both the software’s querying feature and SQL to retrieve database information

3 Produce business documents using word processing software

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Navigate and perform common tasks with the application, such as creating, viewing, editing,
saving, formatting and printing documents, and configuring the application
• Perform repetitive operations efficiently using tools such as Find and Replace, Format Painter,
and Styles
• Create multi-page, multi-section reports with table of contents, title page, lists, and tables
• Insert objects into a document, including text boxes, symbols, special characters, illustrations,
pictures, and clip art
• Use various functions to identify and correct problems with spelling, grammar, readability, and
accessibility

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS


The minimum passing grade for this course is grade point of 1.0 (50% or D). Higher grades may be required to use the course for
transfer credit or to satisfy professional designation criteria. Please refer to the Grades Procedure AD 2.2 for more details on your
calculation requirements to determine the grading level required to maintain satisfactory academic standing, for progression and
graduation.

STUDENT EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
A set of earphones is recommended for the completion of on-line learning in this course.

All JR Shaw School of Business students are required to possess a computing device, either a desktop or laptop, that will meet the
minimum technology requirements. This will enable you to engage in our digital learning environment and to participate in online
assessments. In addition to the minimum technology requirements, your computing device must also support both audio and
video streaming technologies and, as a result, must include hardware (either internal or external) such as a microphone and
webcam. A broadband (high speed) internet connection is also required.

Your computing device must meet the following minimum technology requirements:

• Windows 10
• Processor: Intel i Series 4th Gen or Better or AMD Ryzen Series
• Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB RAM recommended
• Solid State Drive recommended or Hard Drive (minimum free space 15 GB)
• Display resolution: 1366 x 768 minimum, 1920 x 1080 recommended
• Wi-Fi connection: Wireless N, AC or better
• Antivirus Protection: Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are recommended to protect your device and are pre-
installed on your Windows computer

Preferences

Note: while tablets can support your learning, they are not recommended as a main device.
