Two lines are parallel to each other, if the distance between these two lines always remains
constant throughout and they never meet. There are various examples of parallel lines that we
see in our daily life like railway line, 2 steps of ladder, opposite sides of a table etc. A line
which cuts a pair of parallel lines is called a transversal as shown in the figure.

Read the above information and answer the following questions.

Q37. In a society a survey was conducted among 110 families and it was found that 30 of the families
donated some to old-age homes, 20 families donated towards orphanages and the rest donated
to religious places.
I. Write the fraction representing the families who donate towards old-age homes. (1)

II. Write the decimal form of the fraction obtained in I. (1)


III. Write the p/q form of 0.38 . (2)

Case study 3
Q38. Rohan took an Ola cab for visiting the tourist places of Jaipur city. The taxi fare in the city is as
follows:
Fare for the first km is ` 8 and for the subsequent distance it is ` 5 per km.
Using the above data, answer the following questions.
I. Consider the distance covered as x km and total fare as ` y., write a linear equation for this (1)
information.

II. Compare the above equation with ax + by + c = 0 and find the value of (a + b + c). (1)
III. If the total fare is ` 93, find the total distance covered. (2)
