SHE CONQUERED THE EVEREST

About the writer :

The essay SHE CONQUERED THE EVEREST is adopted from an article on the internet by
Dr.B. Sowjanya. It deals with the indomitable spirit of a young woman who was the first
female amputee to scale Everest.
About the lesson :
Arunima Sinha lost her father at the age of three. She was a cyclist, football player and a
national volleyball player. Though she was a law graduate, she didn't get a job. Finally, she
applied for a job in Central Industrial Security Force. She got a call letter but it stated an
error in her birth date. She set out for Delhi to get it corrected. While she was traveling in
train, she was robbed and attacked by some criminals. No one came to rescue her. She put
a brave fight but overpowered. They threw her out of the running train.
THE THUGS HAULED HER OFF THE MOVING TRAIN.
She fell on the tracks. A train went over her left leg. Next morning she was taken to
hospital. Her left leg was amputated and a rod was inserted in her right leg. She became a
sensation when the media picked up her story. The government officials, who wanted to
save their skin spread rumours that she attempted suicide. She wanted to prove the world
that she was not a coward. So, she decided to climb Everest. After getting discharged from
the hospital she went to Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Everest. Madam Pal
encouraged her. She said
'YOU HAVE ALREADY CONQUERED YOUR INNER EVEREST'
She took eighteen months of training. As an amputee she faced many challenges while
climbing Everest. Any pressure on her right leg would spend spams of acute intense pain.
She reached the fourth camp which is called the death zone. Her oxygen level was critically
low, her Sherpa warned her that she might lose her life. But she went on and on 21 May
2013 she reached the summit. Luckily she was given an extra cylinder of oxygen that gave
her a new life.
WINNING ISN'T GETTING AHEAD OF OTHERS. IT'S GETTING AHEAD OF YOURSELF
COMMONWEALTH OF BEES

Poet: William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is widely known as the world's greatest English playwright. He wrote
36 plays,154 sonnets and two long poems. Hamlet, Julius Caesar, The Tempest, Romeo and
Juliet are some of his famous plays.
About the Poem :
The poem Commonwealth of Bees is an excerpt from William Shakespeare's play ,
Henry V , Act-1, scene -2. In this play the Archbishop of Canterbury offers to the king Henry
a lengthy speech, about the life of bees, which is the best example for the organisation of
his commonwealth in the time of war. Here Shakespeare uses bees as a METAPHOR for the
human beings. He says that though they are small insects honeybees can teach us the art of
order.
TEACH THE ATR OF ORDER TO A PEOPLED KINGDOM
The poet observes that they have an organised life they also have some rules and laws to
maintained discipline in order to run their hive. The poet observes that, in bee hives, there
are different classes of bees engaged in different works. The magistrate bees do the
corrective work, the merchant bees collect honey. Solder bees protect their hives and the
king observes the work including the Manson bees who build the hives.
WHO BUSIED IN HIS MAJESTY, SURVEYS
There are some other bees who do their work with due diligence. They have the capacity of
teaching the art of order to human beings. According to the poet, if many different
elements work together for one common end, it will surely reach a successful end.
Conclusion :
Shakespeare makes a companion between bees and human beings about working together
for a collective purpose.
