LESSON PLAN

Teacher Nguyễn Đoàn Hiền Thục - TESOL 437

Level B1 ( from 13 - 15 years old)

Lesson Prepositions of time: in, on, at

Duration 30 minutes

Objective After this lesson, students are able to:


● Identify when to use in/on/at correctly
● Distinguish the differences in the usages of in, on, at
● Apply the use of in/on/at in daily conversations
● Construct sentences containing correct prepositions of time in verbal and
written forms

Flow Warm-up: 5 minutes


● Battleship.
● Divide into 2 groups. Each person will say a word according to the given
topic, then randomly shoot another person of the other team.
● The person being shot must say another word on the same topic within 3
seconds, and continue to choose another person on the other team to
shoot.
● Anyone who got shot without saying the word in time is out.
● In the end, the team that has all members being out will lose.

Topic: fruits (back up: animals, countries)

TPR and Vocabulary Activity: 9 minutes


Step 1: Get to know new words + TPR: 5 minutes
● Ask students to stand up.
● Show 4 words: amazed, cheerful, anxious, depressed.
● For each word: the teacher does the action, along with pronunciation and
interpretation. Students repeat and copy the teacher's actions. The teacher
checks the pronunciation of each student.
● Then, the teacher stops saying the word, the students watch the teacher's
action and then do the action while saying the word aloud.
● Check each student’s pronunciation again.
● Ask a student to do the action for the class to say the word and do the
action.
● Ask students to re-read the words and do the actions, erasing words and
pictures so that they can remind themselves.

Step 2: Slap the board: 4 minutes


● Show the words on the slide again, divide the class into 2 groups, ask
students to line up and give 10 seconds to look at the words again.
Meanwhile, prepare the board, markers.
● Explain the rules of the game: the teacher does the actions, the students
have to run to the board, write the word, then say the word out loud.
Students take turns to play. Whoever writes faster and writes the word
correctly gets 1 point, in the end whoever has more points wins.
● After completing the Slap the board activity, tell students to go back to
their seats.

Lead-in Grammar Lesson: 1 minute


The teacher shows pictures and leads students to guess the topic of the lesson.

Present: 3 minutes
● Introduce the use of in/on/at for different situations.
● In: is used when referring to months, years, seasons, parts of the day
● On: is used when talking about days, dates, holidays with “day”
● At: is used when talking about precise time like clock time, holiday
periods
● Each preposition must have an example, which can prompt students to
read other examples.
● Talking about the notes.

Practice: 6 minutes
Exercise 1: 2 minutes
● The teacher shows how to do the exercise, gives students 30 - 45 seconds
to do it on paper, then invites each student to correct each sentence.
Randomly asked the reason for the answers.
● Each correct answer will get 1 candy.

Exercise 2: 4 minutes
● Put the bell in the middle of the class.
● Question 1 is used as an example.
● The teacher shows each question respectively, gives the students a few
seconds to think, then everyone will run to ring the bell to answer. The
fastest one will have the chance to answer.
● For each correct answer, the student who answers will get 1 candy.
● (Note: Keep an eye out for those who regularly ring the bell and those
who don't. Leave the last sentence to “those who don’t” students.)

Production: 4 minutes
● The teacher asks the students to go and ask other students in the class the
given questions, asking and taking notes of their answers. Students have
2 minutes to ask as many people as possible.
● Then the teacher asks who asked the most people and checks that
person's answers.

Wrap-up: 2 minutes
The teacher summarizes the lesson and assigns homework.
