Kody Scott

Moonlight (2016)

The film has a good balance of visual storytelling and sound which is necessary in conveying its

emotional depth and themes. For instance, the Diagetic and Nondiegetic sounds in the film have

huge roles in conveying meaning and tone. Our main character, Chiron, throughout the film is

navigating his identity, love, and his purpose through the 3 acts of his life. The different diegetic

and NonDiegetic sounds in the movie contribute to the film's soundscape, which helps establish a

sense of intimacy and soul-searching.

For Diegetic sounds, these sounds come from the movie itself, its sounds that all the

characters are able to hear. For example during the opening scene with Chirons childhood, we

hear sounds of the neighborhood, gunshots, people talking, and just overall the jaded sounds of

the city. These types of sounds help give the viewer a non-visual representation of what Chirons

surroundings are like, which allows the viewer to paint their own picture and come to their own

conclusions of what his life is like. This also sets a very uneasy tone for not only the characters

living in it, but also us the viewer watching from the other side of the screen. As for

Non-Diegetic sounds, or sounds made for the viewer, for example we hear background music

which further pushes the very harsh tone of the environment. It mixes classical sounds with some

hip-hop influences coming up with a feeling that's split, which reflects our character's split

identity as a young black man growing up in a hostile urban environment.

Overall these types of sounds blend together to heighten the mood and the tone to give

the viewer a more immersive experience. The nondiegetic music score combined with the

diegetic gunshots and comradery paints a clear picture for Chirons situation, growing up as a

black man in an urban environment struggling to find his identity.
