POSSIBLE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: HOD

1. Briefly tell the panel about yourself.


2. Briefly summarise your personal highlights in your teaching career up to date and how that prepared you for
the role of a good HOD.
3. What steps would you follow when you notice that a certain teacher’s work lack the necessary structure and
standard?
4. What measures should be followed to ensure a safe school environment?
5. Which four important documents must a teacher have and know?
6. As an HOD, what would be your criteria for a formal assessment task?
7. Pre - and Post Moderation of formal assessment tasks and examination papers is of the utmost importance. In
your opinion what is a further step that should be taken to ensure optimal teaching and to give you as Head of
Department an indication of where dropouts are occurring?
8. What is your strength? And your weakness?
9. Two colleagues are at loggerheads. The matter is out of hand and influencing their work. How are you going
to remedy the situation?
10. How would you support a young, inexperienced teacher and empower him/her to set a high standard?
11. How would you handle an educator who is constantly behind schedule and submitting incomplete work?

14. In March, the staff receives a notice that they will have to attend training during the July holiday. A colleague
is refusing to attend training during school holidays. The same colleague is also complaining about her
extracurricular load. How would you address the situation as HOD?
15. As HOD you will be responsible for discipline in your phase. What is the most challenging discipline problem
you’ve had to deal with and how did you handle it?
16. What do you see as the 5 main responsibilities as HOD of the Intersen Phase?
17. Even the best HOD’s sometimes elicits complaints / unhappiness with their colleagues. What complaints do
you think the people reporting to you, as Head of Department will have?

an agenda for such meeting. This must be an indication of what you consider important for a phase meeting.
24. You want to arrange a school trip. How do you involve all stakeholders in decision-making?
25. You are employed at a school where educators have a poor work ethic, morale and a culture of teaching and
learning does not exist - how will you address this?
26. As a newly appointed HOD, how will you ensure the respect and confidence of our subordinates?
27. You are a newly appointed HOD. How will you go about effecting changes and take everybody on board without
causing fear to the less knowledgeable teachers in the department?
28. You realise that the learners do not like you’re learning area. How do you motivate them to understand its
importance?
