REACTION PAPER: THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMA ( 2008 )

FINAL EXAMINATION IN PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH

The Boy in the Striped Pajama is a sad touching story by the director Mark Herman about innocence and
the very evil effects of prejudice and blind obedience during the period of World War
II. A film adaptation of a book written by John Boyne, it's the story of an 8-year-old German boy, Bruno,
who innocently befriends Shmuel, a prisoner in a concentration camp near his new home. The movie
explores significant concepts such as losing innocence, the cruel nature of war,
and how hate causes destruction.
The first important part is how the film shows innocence in childhood. Bruno is a young boy played by
Asa Butterfield, who never observes how serious things are with him. His family movement to a house
near concentration camp is shown through a simple view. He is cut off from the reality of
the terrible things happening near his home and through his innocent curiosity connects him to Shmuel, a
young Jewish boy locked up in the camp, played by Jack Scanlon.
Bruno doesn't know the awful facts about the war, such as what the "striped pajamas" that Shmuel
wears symbolize. And that is the difference-between his carefree, merry childhood and the stark reality of
war.
One of the major ideas of the movie is that friendship and understanding are very important, even when
there is hate and division. The bond between Bruno and Shmuel shows us that, at its heart, being human is
about connecting with each other, and this goes beyond the label society tells us. Two boys of different
social origin and mutual attachment in sentiments of isolation and
a desperate need for friendship. In this, friendship shows the possibility wherein people can show
sympathy to other people under any circumstances
It’s a movie explaining how strong wrong ignorance and biased thinking could be. Bruno’s father is a
Nazi army officer, played by David Thewlis, collaborated
in killing the Jewish folks. He was very strict on what he said was the right thing
to do by him and his fellow man, not like his very innocent-minded son who dared to question the world's
ways. The film shows how stupid ideas and conforming without thinking can eventually lead
to terrible consequences. Bruno's mother, played by Vera Farmiga, is kind but helpless. She loved her son
and could only do what her husband wanted.
The ending of the movie is one of the most touching and saddest part. Without saying too much, Bruno’s
innocence leads to a sad, unforgettable moment that reminds us of the terrible events of the war.
The end leaves the viewer in thought, understanding the disastrous aftereffects of prejudice, hate, and
war-not on the victims, but upon the innocent victims who are sucked into this abyss.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
is actually an extremely emotional film concerning the Holocaust, an idea taken from the side
of child innocence. It showcases the effects of blind obedience but at the same time gives way to the
power of friendship and empathy. The movie makes some parts of history easier to understand, but it still
reminds us how important it is to remember past terrible events and to make sure they do not happen
again. The strong emotions and sad ending of the film stay with you, making it a strong way to start
discussions about human rights, what is right and wrong, and the effects of war.
