Always come prepared. Before you come to a class, lecture, or meeting, make sure to review your notes
from the last time round. This will bring you fully up to speed and ready to pick up where you left off.
If you were advised to do any background reading to prepare for the class, make sure that you get it
done. This will help you to understand any themes, concepts or ideas that the teacher or lecturer is
likely to present in class. A good idea would be to outline the section, article, or chapter beforehand.
Write your outline on one side of the paper so that you can add your class notes to the other side.
Remember the old adage: „By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”
(2.)
No matter how much care and attention you give to plants, they aren’t going to thrive if you don’t know
their specific needs. This is true whether you’re buying a houseplant or planning an outdoor vegetable
or flower garden. Some plants are able to do well in a variety of climates, but others require a controlled
environment or can only survive in a specific region. Before planting a garden or adding a plant to your
potted collection, search online or ask an expert at a nursery questions about conditions the plants
need. Figure out in what region the plants do best. Just because a plant isn’t native to your area doesn’t
mean you can’t grow it, but it’s usually much easier to grow plants that do well in your region’s climate,
temperature and soil. For indoor plants, maintain a fairly steady temperature. If you’re cold, your plant
is cold, too. Avoid putting your green friends in drafty places. If you think it’s chilly, so do they.
(3.)
Choose the right time. Successful requests are all about good timing. Ask yourself what you have done
within a demonstrable time period that has made you more valuable to the firm or organization. It
doesn’t make sense to ask for a pay raise when you’ve not yet demonstrated anything amazing for the
firm - regardless of how long you’ve been there. The time is right when your value to the organization
is clearly high. This means seizing the iron while it’s hot and asking for a pay raise off the back of
excellent successes such as holding a highly successful conference, getting fantastic feedback, getting
a big client signed on, producing outstanding work that outsiders have praised, etc. Don’t choose a
time when the company has posted major losses. Asking for a pay rise based purely on „time done”
is dangerous because it makes you appear like a timekeeper rather than someone interested in the
company’s progression. Never say to your boss: „I’ve been here for a year and I deserve a pay rise.” Your
boss will be likely to respond, „And so what?”

Interviewer: Welcome to the LMC newsroom. My name is Glenda Rinni. Thanks for being with us
today. We’re in Boston, Massachusetts this week and we’re interviewing a number of personalities in the
communications and tech spaces. On our program right now is V.A. Shiva. He’s a professor at MIT and
the inventor of email. Welcome to the show.
Inventor: You are welcome Glenda, thanks for having me.
Interviewer: My pleasure. I appreciate you being here. We were just looking at your copyrights from...
was it from 1982 on email?
Inventor: Yes.
Interviewer: So, pretty impressive stuff. Tell us a little bit about... how did that come about?
Inventor: Sure, you know in 1978 I was around 13 years old and I learned programming in an intensive
programming course at NYU which was set up by the National Science Foundation. I was one of the few
students who was selected for that. Later, I met a doctor from Newark who ran a medical school. He
asked whether I would like to create an electronic mail system for the school and the clinic.
Interviewer: What did you think? What went through your mind?
Inventor: When I first heard the word electronic mail I thought it meant sending electricity through
paper. That’s how new those two juxtaposed words were. So, I spent the next three years actually building
the first email system. And the reason I say it’s the first email system is because there were other modes
of text messaging prior to that but email, as we know it now, is literally the electronic version of the
interoffice memo.
Interviewer: What do you mean by an interoffice memo?
Inventor: So, this medical school had three different locations and they had to communicate between
these locations. They used to have, what was called, a memorandum. It had a To, a From, and a Subject
line. Then, there were things called a CC, or a carbon copy. So, these secretaries would physically write a
memo and they would physically make a carbon copy as well as a BCC, a blind carbon copy and, of course,
attachments. This memorandum was put into an interoffice envelope and it would get sent to other
offices within one campus or intra-office across multiple campuses.
Interviewer: And what did the doctor ask from you?
Inventor: The idea was whether I could create an electronic version of this system. So, that’s what I ended
up doing for those three years and that was the first email system. So that’s sort of the summary of that
history.
Interviewer: Very interesting - and now I get thousands of them.
Inventor: That’s right. Ha. But it’s also an application for thoughtful communication - now, today we use
it for bills, for love letters, for personal communications - a whole lot of different types of communication
but it’s still a medium that’s continuing to grow irrespective of text messaging and blogs. It’s a medium
that’s necessary for these thoughtful types of communication.

3. focus|focusing skills

Szövegátirat:
I’m Jeremy Smith, a leading expert on the brain and learning. Through my work I aim to educate the
world in how to use the brain more effectively. Now I will talk about the problems that people have with
concentrating and focusing and the techniques to overcome them.
Step 1. The problem with concentration. Now the fact is that people don’t have a problem with their
concentration. All the time, every single second of every day everyone is concentrating. They’re
concentrating on the book that they’re reading and then they concentrate on the window outside and
the bird that’s going by and then an attractive person walks by and they concentrate on that and they
think that they have a problem with concentration. Their concentration is immaculate and so what you
have to realize is that your concentration is superb and you have to learn to focus.
Step 2. Mental fitness. You need to be mentally fit because if your brain is a kind of sludge of bad
thinking and long focus and so on, you won’t concentrate. So to make it fit, you have a kind of a series
of gymnasiums you can go into, which include things like mind sports, chess, crosswords, memory
games, memory competitions, creativity games, anything to get your brain actively thinking analytically,
strategically, creatively. Make your brain capable of phenomenal focus and attention and concentration.
Step 3. Be a solution finder. The brain has been called a problem-solving organ and that’s a lovely thing
to be except that it is not what it is. If you are thinking of problems, your concentration is disintegrating,
you’re all over the place so the brain is not a problem solver. Primarily it is a solution finder. If you’re
trying to find the solutions in any situation that arises, you’re actually becoming positive: I’m looking for
a solution, I’m positive, I know that I can do that and this I am capable of, and concentration becomes a
total delight and a natural function of your amazing brain.

Task 4.
1. recording, analysing, changing
2. everything you do
3. biggest time wasters / time wasters
4. minimises it / minimises stress
5. order of importance
6. can find things / won’t waste time
7. segment your day / schedule your day

Szövegátirat:
Are you constantly finding yourself behind at work or school? Do you arrive at the end of the day and
realize you’ve accomplished nothing on your to-do list? Well odds are you are not very good at time
management and that is not doing your psychological health any favours. In fact a study published in
’Work and Stress’ found that workers who didn’t productively manage their time felt less in control of
their lives. Here’s the good news: you can get better by paying attention to how you spend your time.
We’ll help you manage it more effectively and we’re gonna help you learn how to do just that. Today
we’re gonna get you in control of your day with our RACK method: recording, analysing and changing.
Three easy steps to great time management. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Recording. When you wake up tomorrow, note the time in your day planner. As the day
progresses write down everything that you do. Yes, we mean everything. The 10 minutes you spend
getting dressed, the half day of productive work, the hours you spend between social networking sites
– we mean it all. Keep this up from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep.

Step 2: Analysing. At the end of the day go through the schedule and highlight any chunks of time you
don’t feel were used productively. Pick out your five biggest time wasters in your day, be honest with
yourself, you spent half an hour by the coffee machine talking to your co-worker, you spent an hour on
Facebook and you stared into space for 20 minutes. Come on, you get the picture. Especially focus on
the time wasters at work. Why? A study published by the British Medical Journal says that workplace
stress is minimised by effective time management. It also says that workplace stress bleeds into home
life and undermines a relaxed life at home. Here’s the ugly part: add up all the ugly time you wasted,
how much productive time did you blow on activities that got you no results?

Step 3: Changing. Now it’s time to come up with a way to get that time back. Here are three ways to
change your time wasting habits and become a better time manager.

Prioritize. To-do lists are a really effective way to manage your time in your priorities. Limit the number
of tasks you have on this list to five and assign rankings to them in order of importance.

Declutter. Not only is decluttering great for your health but you won’t waste time digging around piles
of stuff to find that one piece of paper you really need.

Schedule. Hey, we all want to kill two birds with one stone but odds are, multitasking will actually
just stress you out and delay you even more. Instead set aside blocks of time for individual activities.
For each activity set start and stop points. This way your day is cleanly segmented. Then stick to this
schedule. Try going one week using these tips to reduce your wasted time. At the end of the week, go
figure out where you’ve improved your time management skills and how much time you’ve saved.

Let’s recap. Today you learned how to manage your time by using our well-cast RACK method. You
recorded, analysed and hopefully changed how you use your time and you did this by learning how to
prioritize your most important tasks, declutter your workspace to save you time and learned how to
build yourself an effective schedule to block out your day . Hey, how did RACK work for you? We wanna
hear how much time you were wasting and how much you’re saving now.

MEGOLDÁS MINTÁK

Task 1.

Listen, Carol, have you ever thought about what your favourite gadget is? I was thinking about this one
day and I think mine is definitely my bluetooth speaker. Do you know what it is? Let me explain. Imagine
that you have some music or a presentation on your mobile device or laptop. The inbuilt loudspeakers
are simply not enough to convey real sound experience to your listeners or audience. Let’s say you are
delivering a speech at a meeting and you want everybody to hear clearly what you’re planning to say.
You just connect the bluetooth speaker to your device and there you go, works wonders, better than a
microphone.

As for the features … Being a woman, I’m not a techie myself but I’ll give it a try. The device itself is really
small, fits into even a handbag, which makes it very handy for travelling and things. It’s portable, easy
to carry and simple to connect because it operates with a bluetooth. You don’t even need a battery, you
don’t need to plug it in, you can charge it from your laptop, using your USB port. And, now it comes in
all kinds of different colours and designs, not just the boring black. I simply love it! It’s so chic and pro.

I can recommend this gadget to everyone who likes to use smart equipment to boost their professional
image. You could be a businesswoman, a sales rep or even a teacher, this gadget is a very good
investment for business trips, conferences, lectures, presentations. I think I couldn’t live without it
because I have to give a lot of presentations and I need to play many short recordings. But for this
device, nobody would hear these tracks.

Right now I don’t think I could list any disadvantages of using such a gadget. I wouldn’t say it’s pricey or
something not many people can afford. I guess the only drawback could be that it does not work with
wi-fi so you cannot connect more devices with your bluetooth… Am I right? I’m not sure, actually. Do you
know that? Or have you ever used this gadget?

13
Task 2.

1. Do you like living in your country? Why yes, why not?

Well, actually, I do. I think it’s a very nice country with amazing people and plenty of opportunities.
I love the way we handle difficulties. We get pessimistic but in 5 minutes we start laughing, even at
ourselves and try to survive the whole thing with irony. The country itself is breathtaking. Different
landscapes, four seasons, I love it.

2. How would you describe the standard of living in your country?

That’s a hard question. I don’t think it’s very high, especially now. I think there are huge gaps though,
between the rich and the poor and that’s not something we could solve soon. But the standard of
living is definitely higher than let’s say 20 years ago and we have become a consumer society.

3. I see. What are the biggest problems local people have to face?

Poverty in certain regions is definitely one. And together with that some crime rates are also high in
certain areas. Pollution is not that bad, I guess, but there are a lot of health issues, mainly as a result
of unhealthy lifestyle and stress.

4. And what are the most common crimes in your area?

I live in the capital and here mugging, theft, burglary and shoplifting could be quite common but not
as bad as it used to be. I’m sorry to say that but we have a lot of money crimes, too, like fraud or tax
evasion.

5. What kind of social changes would you like to see in your area?

I would be happy if people could cooperate more and I would love to see more volunteers in my area.
Other than that, I really don’t know how we could solve more serious issues like homelessness, for
example. The local government could surely organise some events or do more about social issues by
raising awareness, for example.

6. Thank you very much for taking your time. Have a nice day!

My pleasure, really. I hope this was useful. And I forgot to say that I am from Hungary, I’m just a tou-
rist here now.

14
Task 3.

Lisa: Oh, no! You can’t say that! You have a great job, a gorgeous girlfriend…. One would think that
these are the most important things in life, aren’t they?

1. Yes, absolutely! You’re young, handsome and talented. You have a good job, and, Carla, your girlfriend
loves you. What’s wrong? What happened? I hope it’s not a health issue or some big financial problem.

Philip: Well...The only problem is that I’ve just been fired and my girlfriend left me three weeks ago.

2. Oh, no! Poor you! Now I understand! Very bad timing, indeed. You were such a nice couple and you’ve
been working for this company for more than 5 years now. That’s really strange. I’m so sorry.

Lisa: Oh, I’m terribly sorry, too. I don’t really know what to say. Can you say something positive to Philip?

3. Yes, of course! Like I said, Philip, you’re young, handsome and talented. You will find another
gorgeous girlfriend and another great job, which will be even more challenging. You know, every end is
the beginning of something new.

Philip: That’s really kind of you. But I think it’s a personality issue. It seems that nothing is good enough
for me. I always want more. I know I should change, but I don’t know how. Any ideas?

4. Well... I don’t think so. If your girlfriend left you, I wouldn’t say she wasn’t good enough for you.. Or
did I misunderstand something? And it’s not a problem if you want more. That always takes you ahead.
And first of all, you should start looking for a new job. Look at advertisements, ask around.

Philip: OK, sounds good as a start. But I will never get my girlfriend back.

Lisa: Well, probably not. But actually, she wasn’t really your type anyway. What characteristics do you
look for in a perfect partner?

5. I have no idea who the perfect partner is, honestly! I haven’t found one yet. But I guess, she should
be kind and understanding, reliable, responsible and pretty, of course. Or maybe, what is even more
important is that you should have something in common, like interests, hobbies, whatever.

Philip: Hm, you’ve got some good points there. I should consider them. I’m sure I’ll find someone else,
but I’m still really frustrated about losing my job.

6. Yes, that’s really depressing but you shouldn’t give it up. You definitely need some time now to get
out of all this and pull yourself together. I guess maybe you should just take it easy for some weeks,
relax, take up a hobby, read a good book, watch movies… But romantic ones are out of the question,
of course.
