How often do you think about the Roman Empire?

With the new Gladiator 2 movie in

theaters, that number may have increased lately- and for good reason.

Starring Paul Mescal, the sequel to the five time Oscar winning Gladiator takes us on a

journey back to the Roman Coliseum with similar hauntingly beautiful scenes and an epic

plotline of intrigue.

Ridley Scott, the director, always knew he wanted to return to the story, but with the

finality provided from the ending of the first movie, there were some challenges presented.

Instead of Russell Crowe’s Maximus, Paul Mescal takes the lead as a slave fighting to earn his

freedom- the dream of every gladiator.

Mescal, known best for his role in the hit series Normal People, is not the only star of the

show. He’s joined by Joseph Quinn(Stranger Things), Pedro Pascal(The Last of Us), and two

time academy award winner, Denzel Washington.

The story follows these characters as they navigate a very different Rome than the one we

left in the first film, but there is one familiar face. Connie Nielson returns in her role as Lucilla,

playing a much larger part in the narrative this time around.

Reviews and thoughts on the sequel are mixed, but there is one thing that can be agreed

on: the visuals were breathtaking. The film fully immerses you in what it looked like to live and

die under the Roman Empire.

Following a movie as awarded as Gladiator is never easy and the bar was set high for the

producers as well as the actors. The general consensus: it fell short.

Many people thought that instead of trying to tie the plotline to the first movie there

should have been a separate story, but the nods to the first film were plentiful.
There were historical inaccuracies sprinkled throughout as well, but all of this can’t

subtract from the epic battle scenes and the overall cinematic appeal the movie offers.

Gladiator II is a masterpiece of war and intrigue, love and sacrifice. Every character is

portrayed with depth and driven by their own motivations, each of them contributing to the

tangled mess that sets the stage for betrayals and alliances.

It’s faster paced than its predecessor, with the added mystery of the true identity of

Mescal’s character, and every fight in the arena drives the viewer to the edge of their seat.

With a packed cast list of familiar faces, visuals that steal your breath, and the score that

highlights the clash of sword on sword in a roaring arena, Gladiator II is an experience wrapped

up in a film. As we return to the iconic coliseum and reenter the fight, we’re once again

reminded, what we do in life, echoes in eternity.
