Nouns

● Noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing,


ideas,feelings or materials.
● The different kinds of nouns are:
1. Common Nouns, 2. Proper Nouns, 3. Collective Nouns
4. Abstract Nouns, 5. Countable Nouns, 6.
Uncountable Nouns, 7. Possessive Nouns,
1. Common Nouns
These are names given in general to people, places, animals and
things of the same kind.
E.g- cars, chairs, tables etc.
Ex: Circle the common nouns:
1. The cat was nursing her kittens.
2. I bought a book from the store.
3. Children play in the park after school.
4. The dog barked loudly at the mailman.
5. My sister baked cookies for dessert.
2. Proper Nouns
These are the specific names for a person, place, animal or thing.
A proper noun always begins with a capital letter.
E.g: Brahmaputra, India, Mt. Everest.
Ex: Give 2 proper nouns for the given common nouns:
a. Park
b. Book
c. School
d. Hospital
e. Boy

3. Collective nouns
Collective noun is the name given to a collection of people, things
or animals taken together and spoken as a whole.
E.g: A herd of cows, A crowd of people and A flock of birds.
Ex: Fill in the blanks with suitable collective nouns:
class, bunch, team, choir, band
1. A ____ of keys.
2. A ____ of players
3. A ____ of musicians
4. A ____ of singers.
5. A ____ of students

4. Abstract nouns

These are things, feelings, ideas , qualities or states we cannot


see but only feel.
E.g: The girl was asked to tell the truth.
Here, truth is the abstract noun as we can only feel it.

Ex: Underline the abstract nouns in the following sentences:


1. Patience is a virtue that can lead to great success.
2. Knowledge is power in today’s information driven world.
3. Honesty is the best policy in any situation.
4. Friendship grows stronger with time & trust.
5. Respect your elders at all times.
5. Countable & Uncountable Nouns: Nouns that can be
counted are countable nouns. Eg: Two books, Three
pencils, Five girls.
Nouns that cannot be counted are uncountable nouns. Eg:
Milk, Oil, Rice, Hair etc.

Ex: Identify whether each noun is Countable ( C) or uncountable


(U).
1. Apple
2. Water
3. Book
4. Love
5. Happiness
6. Sugar
7. Chair
8. Dog
