CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC

1.Introduction, objective, need, scope, and limitation of the study

1.1. INTRODUCTION

Tech Mahindra's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are led by the Tech
Mahindra Foundation, which was established in 2006 as the company's CSR arm. Guided by
the vision "Empowerment through Education," the Foundation focuses on three core areas:
education, employability, and disability inclusion. It runs programs to bridge skills gaps for
underprivileged communities, especially through its SMART (Skills-for-Market Training)
initiative, which supports skill development for youth in urban areas. The Foundation also
targets inclusive education through projects in government schools and works to improve the
quality of teaching through its Shikshaantar program, which offers training for teachers and
school leaders. Tech Mahindra places strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. The
company has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by
2035. It also prioritizes energy efficiency, water conservation, and biodiversity across its
campuses, promoting renewable energy sources and waste management to support a circular
economy. The foundation also supports projects benefiting people with disabilities, ensuring
accessible and inclusive growth. Moreover, the organization encourages employee
engagement in social responsibility, allowing employees to participate in volunteering and
Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) initiatives. During the pandemic, Tech Mahindra
engaged in initiatives for healthcare support and community aid. Through initiatives like
SMART (Skills-for-Market Training), Tech Mahindra provides vocational training to youth,
enhancing their employment opportunities in various sectors. Impact metrics from FY23
include over 150,000 youth trained in employability programs, 160,000 children benefiting
from educational initiatives, and more than 50,000 volunteer hours contributed. Tech
Mahindra Limited (TML) is a leading global enabler of digital transformation, consulting and
business re-engineering services and solutions. Part of the eminent Mahindra Group, TML
has a presence across 90+ countries with more than 125,000 employees. Tech Mahindra
Limited has been a socially responsible company since inception, and has been contributing
towards CSR activities to benefit socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in India.
1.2OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

Assessing social impact: To examine how Tech Mahindra’s CSR activities, such as

education and skill development programs (e.g., SMART and ARISE initiatives), contribute

to improving the quality of life in communities, especially in terms of education and

employment opportunities.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: To analyze the company program toward

environmental sustainability goals, such as carbon neutrality, waste management, and water

conservation.

UNDERSTANDING STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT: To understand the role of

stakeholders, including employees, partners, and communities, in implementing CSR

programs and promoting ethical practices, transparency, and community involvement.

IDENTIFYING AREA FOR IMPROVEMENT: To pinpoint challenges or gaps in current

CSR activities, helping refine strategies for greater impact and better alignment with

community needs.

GENDER EQUALITY: Empower women and girls by prioritizing their inclusion across all

initiatives and ensuring that at least 50% beneficiaries are women.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS: Special emphasis on empowering

women by equipping them with vocational skills to enhance self-reliance and financial

independence.

1.3NEED AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY

NEED OF THE STUDY

INCRESING STAKEHOLDER EXPECTATIONS: As stakeholders, including customers,

investors, and employees, place higher value on companies with a strong commitment to social and

environmental responsibilities, understanding the impact and effectiveness of CSR programs like

Tech Mahindra’s becomes essential. This study helps gauge whether these initiatives align with

stakeholders' expectations and the company’s broader ethical commitments.

ADDRESSING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES: Tech Mahindra’s CSR

programs, particularly in education and skill development (e.g., the SMART and ARISE

programs), target critical areas of social need in India, such as improving access to quality

education and employability for disadvantaged communities.

STRENGTHENING CORPORATE REPUTATION AND BRAND LOYALITY: For Tech

Mahindra, CSR initiatives are not only about compliance but also about building a socially

responsible brand image. This study helps to measure the impact of CSR on corporate

reputation and customer loyalty, shedding light on how CSR contributes to business

resilience and competitive advantage in the long term.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

EDUCATION AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT INTIATIVES: The study examines Tech

Mahindra's efforts in education, such as its ARISE and SMART programs, which focus on

enhancing access to quality education and improving employability skills for underserved

communities. This section would assess the reach, impact, and outcomes of these initiatives

on beneficiaries and local communities.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT AND BUDGET ALLOCATION: Analyzing the financial

commitment Tech Mahindra allocates annually for CSR activities. Examining how budgets

are distributed across different initiatives and assessing the adequacy of these resources in

achieving desired impacts.

CSR AND BRAND REPUTATION: Examining customer perception, investor confidence,

and public opinion on Tech Mahindra’s CSR contributions and how these influence its

market position.

COMMUNITYBFEEDBACK AND CASE STUDIES: Gathering feedback from

beneficiaries and communities impacted by Tech Mahindra’s CSR activities to assess the on-

ground effectiveness.

LONG TERM IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY: Evaluating the ability of initiatives to

create lasting impact, and examining mechanisms for monitoring long-term outcomes after

project completion.
1.4 Limitation of the study
MEASUREMENT OF IMPACT : Measuring the long-term social or environmental
impact of CSR initiatives is challenging. Outcomes may take years to manifest, making it
hard to assess the effectiveness of investments.

ECONOMIC PRESSURE : During economic downturns or crises, companies might

prioritize core business operations over CSR activities, reducing their social engagement.

REGULATORY AND COMPLIANCE CHALLENGES : Navigating regulations for

CSR spending under India's Companies Act can be complex, requiring detailed
documentation and audits.
Failure to align projects with government-mandated CSR activities could lead to criticism or
legal scrutiny.

LACK OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPANT :Without active involvement from the

beneficiary communities, CSR initiatives may not fully address their needs or sustain their
outcomes over time.

ALIGNMENT WITH CORE BUSINESS GOALS : CSR activities need to align with the
company's broader business objectives. This alignment can sometimes limit the scope of
projects, focusing only on areas that support the brand or business.
