Laying of the strands

Laying is the method that the wires are positioned
to form lay, Cross lay strand is made by the same
diameter but different lay angle in multi-operation.
The parallel lay strand is made only in one opera-
tion so that the wires of each lay will be on the

.
same pitch.

However, fatigue resistance of rope will be less,
as bending stress will be added to each contact

Elevator rope
ee

When Vee-grooves are used to provide traction, the included angle of the Vee should be between 35∞and
K

40∞. Angles of less than 35∞will provide better traction only at the expense of rope life.
With double wrap traction drive, U-groove are normally used. On single-warp installations undercut U-
griives are preferred to Vee-grooves. The radius of the rope seat in this type of groove should be as near as
ak

possible to that of new rope, thus necessitating close diameter and ovality tolerance in the manufacture of
elevator hoist ropes.

Rotation Resistant Rope
A steel wire rope is rotation resistant if the rope does not, or barely, rotates around its longitudinal axis while

lH
lighting an unguided load or when the end termination does not turn or turns very little. This characteristics
results from the fact that the direction of lay of the core of a rotation resistant rope is laid opposite to the
direction of lay of the rope itself. Moreover, when the rope is under load the torque generated by the core
opposes that generated by outer strands, thus creating a torque equalizing effect.

Selecting the proper non-rotation resistant rope

out of our Master Program

For this selection you have to observe two different factors, one is the required breaking load and the
other is the expected amount of abrasion the rope will suffer.
Simply put, the further down the rope is listed in the following diagram, the more the rope’s breaking
load and resistance to outer wear (abrasion) increases.

.
First, a rope type needs to be selected which possesses the required breaking load. For economic

td
reasons (price of the rope), the selected rope should barely exceed the breaking load requirements if
no further resistance to abrasion is required.
