1) BHARAT RATNA

 Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian honour. This honor is given for national service. These
include arts, literature, science, public service and sports.
 Establishment – ​On January 2, 1954 by the President of India Rajendra Prasad.

 Earlier this honor was not given posthumously. It was added in the year 1966.

 So far, 53 personalities from different fields have been awarded the Bharat Ratna Award.
 The award consists of a Bharat Ratna inscribed in Devanagari script with a platinum image of
the Sun on a Peepal leaf. No amount is given with this honour.
 Its first recipient – Sarvepalli Radhakrishna (1954)

Narasimha Charan Singh Swaminathan

 Sachin Tendulkar is the only sportsperson to have received the


Bharat Ratna award and is the youngest person (40 years) to

Padmashree honors are the honors given by the Government of
India.

2) PADMA AWARD

 Padma Award is the second highest honor of the country after Bharat Ratna.
 This award is given for distinguished service in any field in the country.
 Padma awards are given in three categories-
1. Padma Vibhushan
2. Padma Bhushan
3. Padma Shri

 These three types of Padma awards are given in the fields of medicine, literature, sports,
art, social service, education, science, engineering, civil service etc.
 Bharat Ratna and Padma awards were discontinued in the year 1977 by the Janata Party
government, but were restarted in the year 1980 by the Congress government.

3) PADMA VIBHUSHAN

 The Padma Vibhushan award is the second highest award given by the India government.
Which is given for distinguished contribution in various fields for the country.
 This honor is given by the President of India.
 Establishment - January 2, 1954
 First Medal - 1954
 First recipients - Satyendranath Bose, Nand Lal Bose and Zakir Hussain etc.
 It is the second prestigious award of the India after Bharat Ratna.

4) PADMA BHUSHAN

 This is the third highest honor given by the Government of India. And
this honor is also given for valuable contribution to the country.
 This award is given without distinction of service, occupation, position or caste and gender.
 Established – January 2, 1954
 First Medal - Year 1954
 Last Medal - Year 2024 (A total of 17 people have been honored with this honor in 2024.)
 Award – This award consists of a bronze badge. And in the middle there is a lotus flower,
which is surrounded by three leaves.

5) PADMA SHRI
 Padma Shri Award is given by the Government of India to Indian citizens.
This award is given for distinguished contributions in various fields such as art,
education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service, etc.

 This is the fourth highest civilian award given by the Government of India, and its
announcement is made on January 26th.
 Establishment - Year 1954
 First Medal - Year 1954
 First Recipients - Balbir Singh Dosanjh and the first woman recipient was Nargis
(Actress)
 Latest Medal - 2024 (In 2024, a total of 110 people were honored with this award.)

6) Jnanpith Award

 Jnanpith Award is the highest literary honor given in India. This award is given to those
Indian writers who have made outstanding contribution in the field of literature.
 Established – 1961 (First offered in 1965)
 Language – Given in 22 languages ​included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian
Constitution.
 First Winner - G Shankar Kurup (Malayalam Language)
 First female winner – Ashapurna Devi (Bengali language)
 In this award, the winner is given a prize money of Rs 11
lakh.

6) Jnanpith Award

 Till now a total of 61 persons have been given this award.


 Last Award - In the year 2024, the 58th Jnanpith Award has been
given to Rambhadracharya ji for (Sanskrit) language and Gulzar
for (Urdu) language.
 57th Jnanpith Award – In the year 2022, it was given to Damodar
Maujo for (Kokanni) language.
 For the first time in Urdu language, Gyarpeeth Award was given
to Firaq Gorakhpuri in the year 1969.

7) Ashoka Chakra Award

 The Ashoka Chakra Award is India's highest peacetime gallantry medal.


 This honor is given for bravery and sacrifice. This award is also given posthumously.

 Ashoka Chakra is awarded by the President of India.


 This award is given for courage, bravery and self-sacrifice
and commendable work in all three services.
 This is the biggest bravery award.
 Established - January 4, 1952
 First Medal - January 26, 1952
 Ashok Chakra first recipient – ​Havildar Bachittar Singh and
Naik Narbahadur Thapa
 Last recipient – ​ASI Babu Ram
 Neerja Bhanot was the first Indian woman to receive the

8) Kirti Chakra Award

 This award is given to brave soldiers for bravery. It is awarded to those who
have displayed courage while combating the enemy.
 Kirti Chakra is India's gallantry medal. This medal is also given posthumously.
 In priority it comes after Mahavir Chakra.
 Established – Year 1952
 First recipient – 1952

 Last Recipient – 6 people have received Kirti Chakra


in 2024, out of which 3 are posthumous.
 Captain Joginder Singh Gharya and 11 others were
the first recipients of the Kirti Chakra.

9) National Bravery Award

 National Child Bravery Awards – These are given to brave children (6 to 18 years of age)
every year on 26 January in India.
 Started in the year 1957 by the Indian Child Welfare Council.
 This award consists of a medal, a certificate and a cash amount. Financial assistance is given
with this award.
 In 2024, this award has been given to 19 children.
 This award is given in sports, educational, art and culture, innovation and bravery categories.

10) Paramveer Chakra Award

 This is India's highest military medal, this award is given for


showing courage and bravery during war.
 This medal is made of bronze, in which a kind of Indravajra is
made.
 Established – January 26, 1950
 First Medal -Major Somnath Sharma (Posthumously)
 Last Medal – 6 July, 1999 (Captain Vikram Batra)
 The first Param Vir Chakra in India was awarded to Major
Somnath Sharma for military action (1947).

10) Paramveer Chakra Award

 The last recipient of the Param Vir Chakra was Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of the
13th Jammu & Kashmir Rifles for Operation Vijay in the Kargil conflict (1999).
 Total recipients – 21 (14 posthumously)
 Prize Money – Rs 2.50 Lakh Annual Allowance (Total Rs 31 Lakh)

10) Mahavir Chakra Award

 This is the second highest gallantry award of the country,


 Mahavir Chakra is a medal for bravery given during war in India.
 This honor is given to soldiers for bravery, courage and sacrifice.
 It is also given posthumously.
 It comes after Paramveer Chakra in priority.
 Established – 26th January, 1950 which were deemed to have effect from the 15th August,
1947.
 First Medal - Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwa
 Last Medal - Year 2001
 In this, prize money of Rs 10,000 is given every month.
11) Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

 Indira Gandhi Peace Prize is given in memory of former Prime


Minister of India Indira Gandhi.
 This award is given by Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.
 It is awarded every year to any person in the world who has
made significant contribution to social service.
 Established – Year 1986

11) Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

 Its last recipients – Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad


(Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2023 for their efforts towards a
non-violent resolution of the Israel-Hamas conflict.)
 Prize Money – It consists of a trophy, a certificate and a
cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.

12) Rabindranath Tagore International Peace Prize

 This award was started by the Government of India in the year 2011 on the 150th birth
anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
 This award carries a prize money of Rs 1 crore.
 This award is given to poets and artists.
 In the year 2012, this award was given to Pandit Ravi Shankar ji
and in the year 2013, this award was given to Zubin Mehta.
 Last recipient – Sukrita Paul Kumar in the year 2023 for her book
– “Salt and Pepper: Selected Poems”.

13) Jawaharlal Nehru International Goodwill Award

 This award is an international award given by the Government of


India. This award is given to promote international understanding,
goodwill and friendship among the people of the world.
 This award is given by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations
(ICCR), Government of India.

 Established – Year 1965


 First recipient – ​U Thant (Burma), in the year 1965
 Last Recipient – ​Angela Merkel (Germany) in
2009
 This award carries a prize money of Rs 2.5 million
(Rs 25 lakh), and a citation.

14) Sahitya Akademi Award “Hindi”

 The Sahitya Akademi Award is given every year since 1955 for the best works in Indian
languages.
