Welcome to the Arts 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Arts and Crafts
of Luzon (Highlands and Lowlands).

Do you love art? Have you ever dreamed of becoming an artist? Art has been a part
of our lives for as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, people have
been creating, looking, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to address three
questions: what is art, what is its purpose, and why has it survived for this long.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. It will enable you to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

competencies you are expected to learn in
the module.

What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use your MAPEH activity notebook (big notebook) in answering the
written tasks. For activities like drawing, designing, etc., use bond papers in
doing the tasks of which later be made into portfolio. While some outputs that
require creative skill like mat and ball weaving, flower and collage making,
etc., should be done and be included in your submission.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module. Please answer the questions HONESTLY! Your
answers will not affect your grade.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

What I Need to Know

In this module, you will understand more about the arts and crafts of Luzon and
the different techniques used. This will help you apply the local techniques in
making your own crafts using local materials.

After going through this module, you are expected to create crafts that can be
locally assembled with local materials, guided by local traditional techniques
(e.g. habi, lilip, etc).

Specifically, you are expected to:

1. identify the local materials that are used in the arts and crafts of Luzon;
2. create craft using local materials and techniques;
3. show appreciation of one’s artwork.

This lesson will discuss the arts and crafts of Luzon (Lowlands) and will help
you understand more the importance of these artworks in your daily lives.

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF LUZON

BATANES

 Vakul – is a head gear used by the


Ivatan women to protect them from the
heat of the sun and the rains.

ISABELA

 Tumauini church – is a Roman


Catholic Parish Church of San Matias
Apostol. It is made from red bricks and
looks like a huge wedding cake.

NUEVA VIZCAYA

 Bakwat – is a belt used by mothers


after giving birth. This cloth is
beautified with white beads as accents
decorated in patterns that represents
rivers and mountains.

BULACAN

 Singkaban- is a local term for bamboo


arches designed with kayas or
woodshaving. These are used as
decorative arches that beautified the
entrance of a barangay or town during
fiestas and other grand celebrations.

 Firecrackers – usually used for


entertainment and one of the highlights
during New Years Eve and other
celebration.

PAMPANGA

 Lanterns/Parol – are used to


decorate houses, streets and
buildings, not only in Pampanga but
all over the Philippines. These are
created from steel frames and other locally available materials.

ZAMBALES

 Spanish Gate –is one of the historic


landmarks located in Olongapo City,
Zambales. It has high walls made from
locally-quarried stone connected to the
south gate that faced the waterfront.

BATAAN

 Abucay church – is an example of


Renaissance architecture because of
its vertically single- or double-divided
column, and triangular pediments. It
has a five-layer bell tower ornamented
with semicircular arched windows.

BATANGAS

 Barong Tagalog – is an embroidered


piña fabric, made from the fibers of
pineapple.
The burda, called calado, is painstakingly
made by three group of people- the designer, the
embroiderer, and the cutter. The most common
motifs for their embroidery are leaves and flowers which enhanced the fine,
smooth, and delicate qualities of the textile.

 Balisong – is also known as a butterfly


knife. It is made of pure ingots and
billets of stainless steel.

LAGUNA

 Woodcarving – the local term for


woordcarving is ukit. It is a form of
woodworking by means of a cutting tool
(knife) in one hand or a chisel by two
hands.

RIZAL PROVINCE

 Higantes – are big paper machѐ


(papier machѐ) figures of humans that
represent farmers and fishermen. It is
composed of father, mother, and a
child. The materials used are bamboo,
rattan and thin bars.

QUEZON

 Pahiyas Festival – celebrated on


the 15th of May to honor San Isidro
Labrador, the patron saints of
farmers. During the Festival, the
townspeople decorate their houses
with products and colorful thin rice
wafers called kiping.

 The kiping is made from ground


glutinous rice that is thinly coated on
mature leaves and steamed over low
fire.

BICO
L
 Among the arts and crafts of Bicol
region include baskets, bags,
slippers, coin purses, and other crafts
that are made from abaca and raffia
fibers. The abundance of these
natural fibers in the region allowed
the Bicolanons to excel in weaving.

Wow! The Luzon’s arts and crafts


are truly rich in its culture. Now, it’s
time to process the things that you
have learned about the

Coconut leaves

Procedure

1. Pick eight coconut leaves then remove the midribs.

2. Place the four coconut leaves


horizontally then, the other vertically.
Alternately insert the leaves using the over-
under technique.

3. Cut the upper portion of the leaves as shown


in the picture.

folding it and insert at the back.
