Food preservation

1. The process of keeping food fresh for a long time or treating and handling
food to stop or slow down food spoilage and the deterioration of quality is
called food preservation.
2. It helps to maintain the same taste and flavour and to prevent the growth
of microorganisms.
3. Nowadays, modern techniques, such as canning, pasteurization, freezing,
and adding chemicals are used to preserve food.

Ways of preserving food


1. Drying: Some foods are dried to keep them fresh for a longer period of
time. Example- dry fruits
2. Refrigeration or freezing: Some foods are frozen to keep their flavor and
nutritional value. Example- frozen peas,fish,soft drinks.
3. Pickling: Pickling is another method of food preservation. Example-food
preserved in vinegar(pickle)
4. Fermentation: Fermentation is another method of food preservation.
Fermentation promotes the production of organic acids, alcohol, and
carbon dioxide, preventing pathogens’ growth and preserving food.
Fermented foods are rich in health-benefiting probiotics. Example – dosa,
wine, chakuli peetha
5. Canning: Canning is a method of preserving where food contents are
processed and sealed in an airtight container at high temperature. Example-
fruits, pickles, and jams.
6. Sweetening: Sugar kills germs when it is added to food. Sugar enhances the
flavor of the food. Example - jellies, jams, etc.
7. Salting: When fish and other foods are salted, they become dehydrated.
Salt prevents microbial growth. Example – fish, chicken etc.

Food spoilage is the process where a food product becomes unsuitable to
ingest by the consumer. The cause of such a process is due to many outside
factors as a side-effect of the type of product it is, as well as how the product is
packaged and stored. Due to food spoil.

Recognition of spoilt food


1. There’s a slimy film. If lunch meats and holiday roasts feel slick to
the touch or have a weird, glossy sheen, it’s probably time to toss
them out.
2. There’s visible mold.
3. The food is discolored.
4. It has a funky, rancid odor.
5. The texture looks off.
Consequences of eating spoiling food?
1. Abdominal pain and cramps
2. Diarrhea
3. Headaches
4. Vomiting
5. Generally feeling sick

4. Balance diet
A diet that contains adequate amounts of different components of food
required for the healthy functioning of our body is called balanced diet.
Various food components
Carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber, and water are all essential
components in a well-balanced diet.

Fats
Some part of our energy requirement is fulfilled by fats. Fats can be found in fatty
foods such as butter, ghee, oil, cheese, etc.

Proteins

We need proteins for growth purposes and to repair the wear and tear of the
body. Protein also helps in building muscle. It is found in dairy products, sprouts,
meat, eggs, chicken, etc

Carbohydrates

We need the energy to process and it is fulfilled by carbohydrates. Carbs provide us


energy. Carbohydrates can be found in rice, wheat, chapati, bread, etc. Cereals are
our staple food.

Minerals and Vitamins

Vitamins, Minerals, and Fibre improve the body’s resistance to disease. We mainly
obtain it from vegetables and fruits. Deficiency diseases like Anemia, Goitre, etc can
be caused due to lack of mineral in the body.
Source of these components

All these nutrients are present in the foods that we eat. Different food items have
different proportions of nutrients present in them. The requirements of the nutrients
depend on the age, gender, and health of a person.

Importance of a Balanced Diet


• Balanced Diet leads to a good physical and a good mental health.
• It helps in proper growth of the body.
• Also, it increases the capacity to work
• Balanced diet increases the ability to fight or resist diseases.
