Course Purpose

This course will expose education students to a variety of ways in which they can teach visually
impaired students, classroom teaching and learning. Students will gain an understanding on the
methods to use while teaching and this will enhance their pedagogical skills.

1. Purpose of the Course


This course is an introduction to methods of teaching visually impaired students. It enables the
student to have a comprehensive view, understanding and interpretation of various forms of
teaching visually impaired students. It helps the learners to know when to apply each teaching
method and why such methods are relevant to various topics. It will therefore, enable the student
to have a comprehensive view of teaching reality and how it affects education.

2. Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
i) Discuss the meaning and difference between low vision and blind
ii) Analyse the History of education of visually impaired students and the first great men
who founded residential school for the blind.
iii) Explain the meaning of terms like Adventitious blindness, Congenital blindness,
Legal blindness, Resources room and Itinerant teacher.
iv) Analyse various special methods used in teaching visually impaired students and to
Apply informed teaching approaches and methods in the classroom.
v) Identify various useful objects for the visually impaired student.
vi) Explain the link between violence and mental.
vii) Identify the challenges faced by educators while teaching visually impaired students.
viii) Analyse the disadvantages for visually impaired students in using keyboard based
interaction.

Course Content
History of education for the blind; Separation, ward status, Self Emancipation. The first great
men who founded residential school for the blind; Valentine Hauy, Samuel Gridley Howe, Louis
Braille. Reading and writing. Visually impaired students; The special methods used in teaching
visually impaired students; Teaching strategies, Using Aids and Assistive Technology, Providing
an appropriate learning environment. The intricate Link between violence and mental.

4. Teaching Methodology:

Lectures, tutorials and discussions.

5. Instructional Materials/Equipment
Class with teaching aids, writing materials.

6. Course Assessment

Continuous Assessment: 30%

End of semester Examination: 70%
