SECTION A
The following questions are multiple-choice questions with one correct answer. Each question
carries 1 mark. There is no internal choice in this section.
1. In a chemistry laboratory, a student has 0.01 L of 10-2M sulphuric acid solution. The lab
assistant asked the student to reduce its concentration to2 x 10-4M by adding water into
it. What should be the volume of the water added?
A. 200 ml B. 490 ml C. 500 ml D. 510 ml
2. The best method for the conversion of an alcohol into an alkyl chloride is by treating the alcohol
with
a) SOCl2 in presence of pyridine b) PCl3
c) Dry HCl in the presence of anhydrousZnCl2 d) PCl5
3. A student was preparing aniline in the lab. She took a compound “X” and reduced it in the
presence of Ni as a catalyst. What could be the compound “X”
a. Nitrobenzene b. 1-Nitrohexane c. Benzonitrile d. 1-Hexanenitrile
5. The rate constant of a reaction is k=3.28 × 10-4 s-1. Find the order of the reaction.
a) Zero order b) First order c) Second order d) Third order
7. In which of the following oxometal anions does the metal NOT exhibit an oxidation state equal
to its group number?
(a) CrO42- (b) MnO4- (c) Cr2O72- (d) MnO42-
8. Which of the following compounds is formed when secondary alcohols are oxidised by [O]?
Select the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
a. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
b. Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c. A is true but R is false.
d. A is false but R is true.
13.Assertion (A): D-glucose and D-mannose form same osazone with phenylhydrazine.
Reason (R): Osazone formation involves only the last four carbon atoms.
14. Assertion (A): Reactivity of ketones is more than aldehydes.
Reason (R): The carbonyl carbon of ketones is less electrophilic as compared to aldehydes.
15. Assertion (A): Vinyl halides do not give nucleophilic substitution reaction.
Reason (R): Vinyl group is electron donating in vinyl halides.
16. Assertion (A): With excess of HI, glycerol ultimately gives isopropyl iodide.
Reason (R): The reaction occurs through intermediate formation of allyl iodide and
propylene.
SECTION B
This section contains 5 questions with internal choice in one question. The following
questions are very short answer type and carry 2 marks each.
17. Radiators with water are used in car engines to transfer the excess heat from the
engine to the air outside. In a cold winter, the temperature suddenly dips down to -2 °C. If
the water in a car's radiator freezes, the engine will not function properly after some
time. To avoid the freezing of water, a certain amount of ethylene glycol is used to lower
the freezing point of water in the radiator. If the capacity of your car's radiator to hold
water is 1 kg, how many grams of ethylene glycol must you add to lower the freezing
point of water from 0 ° to -2 °C?
(Kf of water = 1.86 K kg/mol; molecular weight of ethylene glycol= 62 g/mol)
18.How much charge is required for the following reductions:
i. 1 mol of Al3+ to Al ii. 1 mol of Cu2+ to Cu?
19. Priyanka is comparing the solubility of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol in water. Which is
likely to be LESS soluble in water and why?
20. Give simple chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds.
(i) Propanal and Propanone (ii) Phenol and Benzoic acid
21. Write the IUPAC name for each of the following.
(a) [Co(NH3)6ICI3 (b) K3 [Fe (CN)6]
SECTION C
This section contains 7 questions with internal choice in one question. The following questions are
(a)Write the elements which shows maximum number of oxidation states. Give reason.
25. There are 5 reagent bottles containing NaNO2, HCl, Phenol, Aniline and NaOH separately in
them. The teacher asked Amit to make an orange dye using suitable chemicals out of the five
reagents given.
(a)Write the chemical equations and the conditions for the steps involved in the
preparation of the orange dye.
(b) Name the type of reaction of the step in which phenol reacts.
26. An organic compound with the formula C6H5Br reacts with CuCN to form compound ‘P’ and
CuBr in presence of pyridine at 475 K. Compound P on reaction with dil. HCl forms compound ‘Q’
which reacts with methyl alcohol produces a sweet smelling compound ‘R’.
Write the chemical reaction showing the above conversions.
SECTION D
29. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
In phenols, the reactions that take place on the aromatic ring are electrophilic substitution
reactions. The –OH group attached to the benzene ring activates it towards electrophilic
substitution. Also, it directs the incoming group to ortho and para positions in the ring as these
positions become electron rich due to the resonance effect caused by –OH group. The resonance
structures are shown under acidity of phenols.
30. The term “Vitamine” was coined from the word vital + amine since the earlier identified
compounds had amino groups. Vitamins are classified into two groups depending upon their
solubility in water or fat. (i) Fat soluble vitamins: Vitamins which are soluble in fat and oils but
insoluble in water are kept in this group. These are vitamins A, D, E and K. They are stored in liver
and adipose (fat storing) tissues. (ii) Water soluble vitamins: B group vitamins and vitamin C are
soluble in water so they are grouped together. Water soluble vitamins must be supplied regularly
in diet because they are readily excreted in urine and cannot be stored (except vitamin B12) in our
body.
(a) Vitamin B1 (b) Vitamin C (c) Vitamin B2 (d) All of the above
(iv)Weakness in muscles and increase in the fragility of red blood cells is caused due to the ____.
SECTION E
