Exercise 2.

4: Factorize the Given Polynomials

Question 1: Factorize

(a) x2 + 5x + 6
Step 1: Multiply 6 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

6×1=6

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is 6 and sum is 5:

Numbers: 2, 3

Step 3: Split 5x as 2x + 3x:

x2 + 2x + 3x + 6

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 + 2x) + (3x + 6)

x(x + 2) + 3(x + 2)

(x + 2)(x + 3)

Answer: (x + 2)(x + 3)

(b) x2 + 4x + 4
Step 1: Multiply 4 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

4×1=4

1/5
Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is 4 and sum is 4:
Numbers: 2, 2

Step 3: Split 4x as 2x + 2x:

x2 + 2x + 2x + 4

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 + 2x) + (2x + 4)

x(x + 2) + 2(x + 2)

(x + 2)(x + 2) = (x + 2)2

Answer: (x + 2)2

(c) x2 + 2x − 8
Step 1: Multiply −8 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

−8 × 1 = −8

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is −8 and sum is 2:

Numbers: 4, −2

Step 3: Split 2x as 4x − 2x:

x2 + 4x − 2x − 8

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 + 4x) − (2x + 8)

x(x + 4) − 2(x + 4)

(x + 4)(x − 2)

Answer: (x + 4)(x − 2)

(d) x2 + 7x + 10

2/5
Step 1: Multiply 10 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

10 × 1 = 10

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is 10 and sum is 7:

Numbers: 5, 2

Step 3: Split 7x as 5x + 2x:

x2 + 5x + 2x + 10

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 + 5x) + (2x + 10)

x(x + 5) + 2(x + 5)

(x + 5)(x + 2)

Answer: (x + 5)(x + 2)

(e) x2 −x−6
Step 1: Multiply −6 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

−6 × 1 = −6

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is −6 and sum is −1:

Numbers: −3, 2

Step 3: Split −x as −3x + 2x:

x2 − 3x + 2x − 6

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 − 3x) + (2x − 6)

x(x − 3) + 2(x − 3)

(x − 3)(x + 2)

Answer: (x − 3)(x + 2)

3/5
(f) x2 −4
This is a difference of squares:

x2 − 4 = (x)2 − (2)2

x2 − 4 = (x − 2)(x + 2)

Answer: (x − 2)(x + 2)

(g) x2 − 3x − 10
Step 1: Multiply −10 (constant term) with 1 (coefficient of x2 ):

−10 × 1 = −10

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is −10 and sum is −3:
Numbers: −5, 2

Step 3: Split −3x as −5x + 2x:

x2 − 5x + 2x − 10

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(x2 − 5x) + (2x − 10)

x(x − 5) + 2(x − 5)

(x − 5)(x + 2)

Answer: (x − 5)(x + 2)

(h) 2x2 +x−6

Step 1: Multiply −6 (constant term) with 2 (coefficient of x2 ):

−6 × 2 = −12

Step 2: Find two numbers whose product is −12 and sum is 1:

Numbers: 4, −3

4/5
Step 3: Split x as 4x − 3x:

2x2 + 4x − 3x − 6

Step 4: Group and factorize:

(2x2 + 4x) − (3x + 6)

2x(x + 2) − 3(x + 2)

(x + 2)(2x − 3)

Answer: (x + 2)(2x − 3)
