Introduction to IT Infrastructure

Components needed for the operation and management

Asst. Prof. Cheng Mich / 2023-2024

1
What is IT Infrastructure?
IT infrastructure, refers to the combined components needed for the operation
and management of enterprise IT services and IT environments.
Information Technology (IT) infrastructure refers to the collection of
Hardware
Software
Network resources
Services
All above to supports the overall IT needs of an organization or enterprise.
The foundation upon which an organization's IT services and solutions are built.
2
IT infrastructure encompasses various components

Hardware
Software
Network Infrastructure
Data Storage
Cloud Services
Security Infrastructure
IT Management and Services

3
4
Hardware
This includes physical devices such as
Servers
Computers
Storage Devices
Networking equipment (Routers, Switches, etc.),
Peripherals (Printers, Scanners, etc.).
Hardware components form the backbone of the IT infrastructure,
providing computing power, storage, and connectivity
5
Software
IT infrastructure relies on various types of software to function.
This includes
operating systems, application software, middleware,
databases, and utility programs.
Operating systems manage hardware resources and provide a
platform for running other software applications,
Application software serves speci c purposes like productivity
tools, customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise
resource planning (ERP), etc.
6
Network Infrastructure
Networking components are crucial for enabling
communication and data exchange between devices and
systems.
This includes
routers, switches, rewalls, modems, cables, wireless
access points,
and protocols that facilitate data transmission over local
area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), or the
internet.

7
fi
Data Storage
IT infrastructure requires storage systems to store and
manage data e ectively.
This includes
Storage Area Networks (SANs),
Network-Attached Storage (NAS),
Cloud Storage Solutions,
and other data storage devices
that ensure data accessibility, security, and reliability.
8

Cloud Services
Is Cloud computing has become an integral part of IT infrastructure,
o ering on-demand access to computing resources such as
Servers,
Storage,
Databases,
and Applications over the internet.
Cloud services include
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS),
Platform as a Service (PaaS),
and Software as a Service (SaaS).
9
ff
Security Infrastructure
Security components are essential to protect IT infra.. from
cyber threats: Malware, Phishing, Hacking, DDoS Attacks,..
and unauthorized access.
This includes
rewalls, antivirus software, intrusion detection systems
(IDS), encryption tools, authentication mechanisms, and
security policies to safeguard data and systems.

10
fi
IT Management and Services
IT infrastructure also involves
management tools,
processes,
and services required for the maintenance, monitoring, and
optimization of the entire IT environment.
This includes IT service management (ITSM), system
monitoring tools, backup and recovery solutions, and IT
support services.

11
Well-designed IT infrastructure
A robust and well-designed IT infrastructure is vital for
organizations to
ensure e ciency,
reliability,
scalability,
security in their day-to-day operations
and delivery of IT services to users and customers.

12
ffi
Why IT infrastructure is important
Technology powers nearly every aspect of today’s businesses
from an individual employee’s work to operations to goods
and services.
When properly networked, technology can be optimized to
improve communication,
create e ciencies
and increase productivity.

13
ffi
Why IT infrastructure is important cont..
If an IT infrastructure is exible, reliable and secure, it can help
an enterprise meet its goals and provide a competitive edge in
the market.
Alternatively, if an IT infrastructure isn’t properly implemented,
businesses can face connectivity, productivity and security
issues—like
system disruptions
breaches
Overall, having a properly implemented infrastructure can be a
factor in whether a business is pro table or not.

Highlight Importance of IT infrastructure
1. Facilitating Operations: communication, data storage,
information sharing, and task automation.
2. Enhancing Productivity: streamlines work ows and automates
repetitive tasks, increasing overall productivity
3. Enabling Communication and Collaboration: networking tools
and communication systems, enables real-time communication
and collaboration among employees, geographical locations
4. Supporting Decision-Making: Analytical tools and systems help
extract insights from vast datasets, aiding in strategic planning
and operational optimization.
15
Highlight Importance of IT infrastructure cont..
5. Customer Service and Experience: customer service
platforms and helps manage customer relationships,
Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
6. Security and Risk Management: security measures to
protect sensitive data, systems, and networks from cyber
threats and breaches
7. Scalability and Adaptability: scale resources, Cloud-based
solutions

16
Highlight Importance of IT infrastructure cont..
8. Competitive Advantage: enabling faster time-to-market for
products/services, e cient resource utilization, and the
ability to adopt emerging technologies
9. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery: backup,
disaster recovery, and redundancy mechanisms, ensuring
continuity of operations

Efficient and reliable IT infrastructure acts as the backbone

E cient and reliable IT infrastructure acts as

the backbone of modern businesses,
enabling them to adapt to changing market dynamics,
improve operational e ciency,
and drive innovation while ensuring data security and
compliance with regulatory standards.
