FINAL EXAMATION

ENGLISH PHONOLOGY FOR LANGUAGE TEACHERS


EXAMINER: Dr. Muhammad Amin, M.TESOL

1. The assignment covers:


a. An introduction containing general perspectives of phonetics and phonology
(the general and teaching-related definition(s) of phonetics and phonology,
the current practice of teaching and learning pronunciation in the world and
Indonesia), the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of teaching pronunciation including the
what and how to assess in the pronunciation.
b. Choose two (2) informants, from whom you collect data on their spoken
language performances.
c. Evaluate their language performance both at the segmental and
suprasegmental (prosodic) levels and also intelligibility and
comprehensibility. (You might need to suggest why problems/errors happen)
d. Based on the results of your analyses, formulate suggestions on what and
how to improve each informant’s language abilities.
e. Do not forget to list all references used in your paper.

2. The assignment should be at least 2000 words long excluding the references.
3. Format of writing:
a. Margins: left 4 cm, right 3 cm, top 3 cm, and bottom 3 cm.
b. Space: 2 between lines, and 3 before subheadings.
4. Criteria for assessment in terms of content and form:
a. Quality of presentation of the introduction part as in No. a.
b. Quality of analysis of informants’ language performance as in No. c.
c. Adequacy and relevance of suggestions and recommendations formulated to
each informant.
d. Coherence and structure of the paper and order of points of
discussion/argument.
e. Clarity and accessibility of text including clear and consistent layout, script,
and spelling; provision of subheadings where appropriate, introductory and
concluding paragraphs for each section, topic sentence, avoidance of overly
long and complex syntax, etc.
f. Clarity, consistency, and appropriateness of academic conventions for
quoting, paraphrasing, attributing sources of information, citing references,
etc.
5. Due date is based on schedule of final examination released by the faculty.
