Speaking Module

- This is the only module in the entire test that is conducted live in the presence
of a human examiner

- Conventionally/traditionally, this test is conducted across the table with the

test taker and the examiner sitting in front of each other

- Certain test centers after/through the pandemic moved to video conferencing

for this module

- The date of the speaking module is usually different from the main test date

- The confirmation mail is sent usually 3-5 days in advance over the registered
email

- You have to ensure that you keep track of your registered email ID once you
have booked the test

- Your speaking test is recorded – the audio will be recorded throughout

- The test is usually 15-18 minutes long

The speaking test is divided into 3 parts:

Part – 1: Introduction/Conversation
- In this part, the examiner will be asking questions related to topics of
everyday life, so the questions would be fairly general/basic in nature.
- Your responses should be CONVERSATIONAL – ideas should be FREE-
FLOWING.
- The answers should NOT be MEMORIZED or CRAMMED-UP.

Part – 2: Long Turn/Cue Card

- In this part, the test-taker is provided with a topic and some follow-up
questions
- The test-taker will have 1 minute to prepare on the topic and has to speak
for 1 – 2 minutes
- While preparing, you can jot down notes (rough sheet and stationery will
be provided)
- The time-keeping is going to be managed by the examiner – they will
inform you when to BEGIN and when to STOP.
- After the attempt is over, you have to RETURN the question as well as the
rough sheet.

Part – 3: Discussion/Extension
- In this part, the test-taker will be asked questions that are related to a third
element – the society, the people in your country, the children, the celebrities,
the older generation, the teenagers
- These questions will be opinion-based.
- The nature of the questions will be broadly related to the topic that you
receive in Part – 2
- The examiner will CROSS-QUESTION the test-taker

the present?

Repetitions and self-correction should be RARE or OCCASIONAL (2-3

TIPS FOR ANSWERING P1 QUESTIONS

1. AVOID FACTS

Do you like wearing traditional clothes?

Absolutely, I do. It is an important part of my culture as I belong to India

and our traditional dress includes sarees and suits for women, and kurta
pyjama and dhoti for men. Such forms of clothing symbolize our love,
devotion and respect towards the values of our country.

Absolutely, I do. In fact, I find myself dressing up in sarees and suits for any
wedding occasion or festivities. Personally, I think I look the best whenever I
adorn myself in traditional clothing.

Not anymore, as I suffered a grave injury in 10 th grade. Ever since then, I

have developed a fear of balls flying at my face, so I try to stay far away
from it.

3. USE A VARIETY OF EXPRESSIONS TO EXPRESS OPINION

YES:
Absolutely/Surely/Definitely/Of course/Certainly/I completely agree with
NO:
Absolutely not/Of course not/Not really/Certainly not/Surely not/I do not
agree/I completely disagree with…
Middle Stance/Neutral:

the fence about it/It depends on the situation/Sometimes

Do you enjoy online shopping?
Certainly, I do as I find it extremely convenient to just sit at home and order
anything off the web, and have it delivered right at my doorstep. I think we
should all thank technology for such a wonderful invention.
Not really, as I am the kind of person who likes to visit physical outlets and
try on clothes before purchasing. I think it also helps me with taking out
some “me” time for myself, especially since I’ve got such a hectic work
schedule.
Do you like receiving gifts?
Well, it depends on the person. And what I mean to say by that is when a
close friend gifts me something, I truly cherish it and don’t mind taking it as
I know they put a lot of thought into it. However, when I receive them from
acquaintences I feel quite awkward while receiving them.
