INTRODUCTION

1. Rationale of the study

Balancing study, work, and participate in extracurricular activities among

students is a topic of significant interest in both academic research and practical
application. The theoretical basis for studying this phenomenon draws from various
fields including sociology, psychology, education, and organizational behavior.
Research on students' balance between study, work, and club participation is important
because it involves many important aspects of student life and profoundly impacts
personal development. and their learning. Balancing between studying, working, and
participating in clubs helps students manage their time more effectively, thereby
improving study performance and learning outcomes. Managing multiple roles helps
students develop time management, self-management, and autonomy skills, skills they
will need in their later lives and careers. Participating in extracurricular activities such
as clubs helps students develop social, communication, and leadership skills,
complementing their classroom learning. Balancing study, work, and club participation
creates opportunities for students to develop personally, socially, and spiritually.
Managing a balance between activities helps reduce stress and enhance mental health,
making it possible for students to relax and enjoy student life more actively. Work
experience and club participation can allow students to network and create future
career opportunities. Therefore, research on the balance between studying, working,
and participating in clubs for students helps improve academic performance and brings
many other benefits to students' development and success. members during and after
studying.

CHAPTER 1: LITERATURE REVIEW

A literature review is an important part of the scientific research process because

it helps readers better understand the current research situation and previous studies
related to the topic being researched. Hence, the objective of this chapter is to
emphasize certain components of the literature that the researcher has chosen to
explore to advance the investigation. The elements considered are: The elements
considered are: an overview of part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, and a healthy
balance between work, study, and extracurricular activities; the impact of part-time
jobs and extracurricular activities on students’s academic performance; and the
importance of a balance between working, studying, and participating in
extracurricular activities.

1.1 Overview of part-time job

1.1.1 Definition of part-time job

Elizabeth Walter on Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2008) defines

part-time is if you occupation part-time or prepare part-time or do part-time work, you
work for only some of day or the week and Job is the regular occupation which a
person does to get money.

Victoria Bull on Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary (2008; 318) defines part-
time is occupation only a part of the day or week and job is work for which you accept
regular payment or particular duty or piece of work.

Other definition of part time job, According to job search. about. Com, a part-
time job is those that require you to work 35 hours, or under a programmed amount of
hours set by an employer, or less given week.

Four definitions of part-time job have been written above, but basically they
contain a similar definition: a part time job is an occupation only some of day or week
if they commonly work fewer than 30 or 35 hours per week where they accept regular
payment or get money.

10
There are many kinds of part time job that has held by college student.
According to Suyadi on Miskin Bukan Halangan Sekolah (2011;95) said that generally,
there are many kinds of part time jobs to college students, for example : tutor ( private
teacher to Elementary School, Junior High School, and Senior High School), writer or
columnist who writes journal and articles, businessman and businesswomen pulse,
agent, editor, and seller. In addition he also said on Miskin Bukan Halangan Sekolah
(2011; 214) that to college student who have part time job, they can work freelance,
businessman and businesswomen, and tutor.

1.1.2 Advantages of part-time job

Part-time job is not simply a way for students to earn extra income; it is also an
action that brings many important benefits to their comprehensive development. With
the rising cost of living and increasing financial pressure, additional income from part-
time work has become important in helping students become independent and secure
their daily lives.

Firstly, working part-time is the ability to earn additional income. This income
not only helps students cope with daily living expenses, but also creates opportunities
to undertake recreational activities, improve personal skills, or even invest in personal
development. people and professions.

Secondly, part-time work is a good opportunity to develop career skills.

Students not only learn specific skills related to their work but also hone important
skills such as communication, time management, teamwork, and problem-solving.
These skills are not only important in the current work context but also create a solid
foundation for future career development.

Thirdly, career experience from part-time work is not only a milestone in

students' educational journey but also a deciding factor when they enter the labor
market. It helps build an impressive personal profile, demonstrating the student's
commitment and contribution in a real work environment. This can be a deciding
factor when employers are evaluating candidates, especially in competitive
occupations.
11
In addition, part-time jobs provide opportunities to build relationships within
the industry. Meeting and working with colleagues, superiors, and sometimes
customers, opens up a new world of social and professional relationships. This is not
only an opportunity to learn from experienced people but also an opportunity to build a
strong social network, which is important in creating future career opportunities.

Finally, one of the other important aspects of part-time work is developing

independent thinking and responsibility. Students must self-manage the balance
between study time and work time, setting the right priorities to ensure that both
aspects are prioritized and do not affect each other. This requires autonomy, self-
management, and the ability to be flexible in adjusting schedules.

In short, working part-time not only brings additional income but is also an
opportunity to develop professional skills, build relationships in the industry, and
develop independent thinking and responsibility.

1.1.3 Disadvantages of part-time job

Part-time work, although it brings many benefits, cannot avoid the limitations
and challenges that students face. One of the most important aspects is the time
pressure it creates. Facing a busy schedule of both study and work, students often face
considerable pressure to balance work time, study time, and even rest time. This can
lead to stress and fatigue, affecting mental health and overall health.

Another important issue is the impact on academic performance. Part-time jobs,

if not managed carefully, can reduce concentration and the quality of school work.
Students may feel tired after long work hours, making it more difficult to review and
participate in classes. Fatigue can lead to a reduced ability to absorb information and
affect the ability to understand and apply knowledge.

The next challenge is the lack of time for leisure and social activities. With a
busy schedule, students may find it difficult to make time for themselves, family, or
friends. Deficiencies in this area can impact optimism and the overall college

12
experience. Student life is not only about studying and working but also requires time
for entertainment and socializing to maintain balance and happiness.

Many students also have to deal with part-time jobs in jobs that are not directly
related to their major. This can create inconsistency between the job and the desired
career. Students may feel that this is just a job to earn an income and does not bring
real value to their development in their desired field of study or career.

Health aspects and rest time are also one of the black spots of part-time jobs.
Students often have to work unfavorable hours, which can lead to a lack of sleep and
stress. Their mental and physical health can be put at risk if they don't get enough rest.

1.2. Overview of extracurricular activities

1.2.1 Definition of extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities are additional activities outside of regular classroom

work that aim to develop students' skills and interests . These activities provide
opportunities for students to implement their knowledge, acquire new skills through
self-education, and develop transversal competencies. (Scispace)

Extracurricular activity means any optional, non-credit educational or

recreational activity that supplements the education program of the school. Activities
such as sports, visual and performing arts, field trips, character education, club.( Rodel
Foundation of Arizona)

Extracurricular activities are opportunities to engage in extensions of academic

activities or non-academic activities under school auspices. In special circumstances,
for example, when there are budget or scheduling constraints, extracurricular activities
may provide experiences that would otherwise be offered within the school day.( Mary
Elizabeth)

Extracurricular activities are defined as academic or non-academic activities

that are conducted under the auspices of the school but occur outside of normal
classroom time and are not part of the curriculum. Additionally, extracurricular

13
activities do not involve a grade or academic credit and participation is optional on the
part of the student ( Phil Gardner 2012- American Journal of Business Education )
1.2.2 Effect of extracurricular activities

Many students have busy daily lives revolving around school and any other
outside activities they may be engaged with. Such as extracurricular activities, which
consist of sports, club, band, theater, and much more. Song with these activities comes
with different effect on students, which can be beneficial or negative.

First of all, there are benefits that do come with participating in extracurricular
activities. Such as a stress reliever or a break from school( both mentally and
physically). It keeps a student more involved and engaged because it allows them to
meet new people and apply any social skills they have learned. Furthermore, students
have many opportunities to learn more. For physically, extracurricular activities
keep students active and moving daily, which is a positive aspect for them body
system and health. As for mentally, it will teach students skills, and give them the
motivation to do better educational wise in the classroom.

However, there may possibly be negative. For instance, physical activities can
cause possible injures to the student. Additionally, extracurricular activities make
students feel overwhelmed and leaving them having to constantly over think because
of all the stuff they may be dealing with other than it.

Last but not least, most students will have to adapt and make wise use of their
time by creating a balanced schedule that will teach them how to have enough time to
be productive in all categories of their daily lives. While still leaving time to rest and
giving yourself time to mentally and physically take a breather and recover.

1.3. Overview of a healthy balance

1.3.1 Definition of a healthy balance

In today's fast-paced world, finding a healthy balance is essential for overall

well-being. A healthy balance encompasses physical, mental, and social health aspects

14
of life. It involves maintaining a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise, getting
enough rest, and managing stress effectively.

Finding a healthy balance requires self-awareness, discipline, and the ability to

adapt to changing circumstances. It is about listening to your body's needs and
honoring them without guilt or shame. Ultimately, achieving a healthy balance leads to
increased energy levels, improved mood, better relationships, and overall happiness.
Striving for this equilibrium should be a priority in everyone's life.

1.3.2 Importance of maintaining a healthy balance in life

To be happy and healthy generally, one must maintain a good balance in life.
Striking a healthy balance between physical health, mental health, and social health is
crucial.

When we prioritize one area of our life above another, we run the danger of not
feeling content and fulfilled. For instance, concentrating only on professional
achievement might result in burnout and damaged relationships with family members.
Neglecting our physical well-being, however, can lead to disease and a decline in
productivity.

We may get a better sense of balance in our lives by putting self-care first and
scheduling leisure and happy activities. This might include engaging in fulfilling
activities, getting regular exercise, spending time with friends and family, or practicing
mindfulness or meditation.

15
CHAPTER 2: THE STUDY

This chapter first presents the research questions and the subject of the study.
The purpose of this study is to investigate what methods students use to balance work,
study, and participate in extracurricular activities, thereby understanding the
difficulties they encounter. Last but not least, chapter 2 also presents the analysis of
the data gathered from the research.

2.1 Research questions

The researcher is a student who recognizes that the imbalance between studying,
working, and participating in extracurricular activities of students from the Academy
of Finance, causes many problems that affect students’ learning.

As a result, the following questions are addressed in this study:

1. What is the academic performance of AOF students?

2. What are the difficulties AOF students encounter in balancing work, study and
participate in extracurricular activities?

3. What recommendations for this matter?

2.2 Participants

The study was originally intended to include all students at the Academy of
Finance, but due to time constraints, the study only included 500 students in the
academy. This student study will examine whether students have difficulty balancing
work, studying and participating in extracurricular activities. From there, propose
more effective methods.

2.3 Data collection instrument

Online questionnaires are a useful way to collect data. This method can bring
several benefits, such as: cost savings, especially the ability to reach a large number of
respondents at a relatively low cost; flexibility allows researchers to customize
questionnaire design and content to collect specific information, meet the diverse

16
needs of respondents, and ensure the relevance and accuracy of the data collected.
Respondents have some autonomy to answer questions and are more confident when
giving answers than when facing each other.

There are three main parts to the questionnaire. The first part is the part
containing the participant's personal information. The information in this section
assists the author in classifying and analyzing the results. The second part of the
questionnaire is the part where participants check the "Yes" or "No" box, thereby
helping researchers know whether they work part-time or participate in extracurricular
activities or not. The third part is in-depth questions related to the research topic, such
as a survey of students' learning situations. In addition, there are some additional
questions that respondents need to write down, such as the difficulties they encounter
and the methods they use to balance work, study, and participation in extracurricular
activities. This supports the author in researching and providing specific statistics.

2.4 Data collection procedure

The research mentioned above methods have been carried out at the Academy
of Finance from November 25, 2023, to January 10, 2024. The questionnaire was
broadcast live to the students and each student needed about 3-4 minutes to complete.

2.5 The current balance between work, study and participate in extracurricular
activities for students

Problems Yes No

Students work part-time 68,9% 31,1%

Students join club 47,2% 52,8%

Students work part-time while joining the club 36,8% 63,2%

17
Through the survey, the authors found that the number of students working
part-time accounts for a large proportion of 68.9%. This is proof that many students
choose to work to gain more income as well as experience for future jobs. The rest
(31.1%) do not work part-time, mainly in first and second year students when they do
not have many opportunities and ability to arrange time to work part-time.

Next is the number of students participating in clubs with a rate of 47.2%,

which shows that students are also very interested in extracurricular activities.
However, the number of students who do not participate in extracurricular activities
also accounts for 52.8%.

In addition, balancing many jobs is very difficult, but up to 36.8% of students

work part-time and join clubs. The remaining 63.2% shows that the majority of
students who will only choose to work will not join the club and vice versa. This is a
necessary data to help the author know the balance ability of students. There are many
reasons behind this quantity difference. For working students, studying is not the only
concern, while for non-working students, studying is the only concern. Busy and
strenuous part-time jobs make students tired when they come home from work. They
no longer have enough energy to study, or even go to class. This leads to a serious
decline in academic performance after deciding to work part-time. Regarding students
who do not work part-time, they can devote all their attention and time to studying,
and have more free time to rest than students who work, so they have full energy to
study.

Another essential data is the learning situation of students at the Academy of

Finance to know the balance between studying, working part-time and participating in
extracurricular activities. The data is presented in the form of a pie chart.

18
Looking at the chart, we see that the academic results of students at the
Academy of Finance are unevenly distributed. The proportion of good students
accounts for the highest proportion and accounts for 48.1%. Second is the average
student rate of 27.4%. Ranked third is the rate of excellent students, accounting for
13.2%. Ranked fourth is the rate of excellent students, accounting for 8.5%. The rate
of poor students is the lowest at 2.8%.

Data show that the majority of students have good, good, and excellent
academic performance, accounting for nearly 70%, showing that they have a
reasonable schedule for studying and other activities. However, there are still more
than 30% of students with average or weak academic performance and this shows that
there are still 1/3 of students who cannot balance their studies and other activities.

The above data shows that students are still unable to balance their time
working, studying, and participating in extracurricular activities. From there, we need
to come up with reasonable methods to balance students' studies, work, and
participation in extracurricular activities.

19
2.6 Difficulties students encounter when balancing work, study and participate in
extracurricular activities

2.6.1 Frequent stress and peer pressure

The problem students often encounter is being exhausted and having little time
to take care of themselves. After spending most of their time participating in activity
clubs and working part-time jobs, students no longer have enough time to focus on
studying or other interests. Participating in activity clubs often requires Ask for time
and energy. Students may be required to participate in meetings, prepare for events, or
participate in projects. These activities can take up a large portion of time and cause
conflict with studies or free time. In some cases, students may feel pressure from peers
or from the social environment. to participate in extracurricular activities. They may
worry about being isolated or excluded if they do not participate in clubs or social
activities. Participating in many activities can lead to divided attention, reducing
learning performance. Students may not be able to fully concentrate on their studies
when they have to divide their time and health between many different activities.
Participating in too many extracurricular activities can disrupt the balance between a
student's work and personal life. They may not have enough time to rest and recharge,
leading to fatigue and reduced academic performance.

2.6.2 Lack of time to study

The second problem students often encounter is not being able to manage their
time. Some students may not be educated or have not fully developed time
management skills. This may stem from them not having learned how to prioritize
work, plan, or use time management tools. Pressure from studies, work commitments
and social life can make students feel stressed and out of control of their time. When
they feel pressured, they may not be able to manage their time effectively. Students
may develop bad habits, such as being lazy or not using their time effectively, causing
them to be unable to manage their time effectively. Modern technology, such as
smartphones and social media, can distract students' attention and reduce their
productivity. Uncontrolled use of technology can lead to wasted time. Students may
lack specific goals or be unclear about what they want to achieve in life. This can
20
cause them to lose interest and direction, causing an inability to manage their time
effectively. To improve time management, students may need to develop time
management skills, set specific goals, create plans and schedules, and learn to
prioritize tasks. Important mission.

2.6.3 Lack of entertainment time and time for surrounding relationships

The third problem students often encounter is a lack of time for entertainment
and social relationships. The main reason is heavy academic pressure. With a unique
study schedule, students often have to spend many hours every day to continue
building knowledge, doing homework and preparing for exams. In addition, many
students also have to rely on part-time jobs to cover living expenses and tuition. This
causes their leisure time to decrease significantly, not enough to relax and enjoy life.
Additionally, some students connect with social activities and volunteer organizations,
working to further share their time.
Difficulties in time management also contribute to this problem, preventing
them from making effective use of their time for both academic work and leisure
activities. Finally, social pressure and expectations from family and friends can also
create feelings of stress and being held back from relaxing and maintaining social
relationships. In short, the combination of these factors means that students often face
a lack of time for entertainment and social care in daily life.

2.6.4 Unable to manage time

The fourth problem students often encounter is schedule conflicts. Work and
class schedules can overlap, creating scheduling conflicts and causing confusion and
stress. Courses and class schedules are often scheduled at fixed times of the day or
week. This can cause conflicts with students' work schedules, especially if they work
hourly or have irregular work schedules. Students often have irregular or variable
work schedules this week or next week. This makes it difficult for them to plan their
studies and participate in other activities. If students have to travel between home,
school, and work, travel time can create conflicts in their schedules. Students often
want to participate in extracurricular and social activities, such as clubs, organizations,

21
or social events. This also causes conflicts with their study and work schedules. There
may be unexpected changes in the study schedule, such as final exams or unmentioned
tests. These changes may create conflicts with work plans or other student activities.
Some students may lack a plan and not manage their time effectively, causing them to
experience scheduling conflicts and difficulty focusing on important tasks.

2.7 Methods that students used to balance work, study, and extracurricular
activities

2.7.1 Set up a reasonable timetable and schedule

The first method students often use is to set a timetable. Schedules help students
know what they have to do and when, thereby helping them divide their time
appropriately for different activities such as studying, working, playing and relaxing.
This helps avoid wasting time and increases efficiency in daily life. Having a clear
schedule helps reduce stress and pressure for students. They don't feel worried about
time management and meeting deadlines, thereby creating a healthier learning and
living environment.

Reasonable schedules help students create a balance between study and

personal life. They can effectively spend time on academic work while still making
time for fun activities, relaxation, and maintaining relationships within the social
system. Establishing performance times and schedules The program helps students
develop discipline and self-management skills. This is an important skill that helps
them succeed not only in studying but also in later life.

2.7.2 Prioritize tasks from simple to complex, sacrificing some less important tasks if
force majeure occurs.

The second method students use is to prioritize tasks. Completing simple tasks
often brings a sense of comfort and confidence to students. This can motivate them to
continue working on more complex tasks. Prioritizing tasks from simple to complex
helps students manage their time more effectively. They can easily set up plans and
estimate the time needed for each task, thereby avoiding overload or completing tasks
off schedule.
22
In case of force majeure, such as being overloaded with work or facing an
urgent problem, optimal prioritization of important tasks will help students optimize
their time and resources. By focusing on more important tasks, they can make sure that
the most important work is completed on time and with quality. By sacrificing some
less important work to focus on important work, students can optimize their work
performance. This helps them achieve better results in a short time.

2.7.3 Only focus on one thing, don't do too many things at the same time

The third method students use is to focus on one thing. When focusing on a task,
students can easily access and maintain a state of high concentration, thereby
enhancing work performance. Concentration helps students complete work more
quickly and effectively. Focusing on one task helps students produce more solid
results within deadlines. Instead of spreading their energy across multiple tasks and
failing to complete them with quality, they can focus on one thing and achieve
significant results over a long period.

2.7.4 Use effective time management techniques such as the Pomodoro technique

The fourth method students use is the Pomodoro time management method. The
Pomodoro method is a method of working in short bursts of time (25 minutes) and
taking breaks (5 minutes). The Pomodoro method or technique is very simple as
follows: when faced with a large task or series of tasks, divide it into small tasks to do
in a short period, with short work intervals in between. short “vacations”. This method
will train students' brains to focus on working for a short period, helping them fall into
a situation where they always have deadlines to complete their work and are also
regularly recharged. This method helps students increase concentration and manage
distractions. Applying Pomodoro will help improve work productivity significantly.
(Phuong Nguyen, 2021)

23
CHAPTER 3: RECOMMENDATIONS

Through analysis and evaluation of a survey of more than 1,000 students at the
Academy of Finance, the authors found the problems that students are currently facing.
Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to propose some useful solutions to help
students balance between working, studying, and participating in extracurricular
activities. In addition, the writer also gives specific examples to help students easily
visualize those methods.

3.1. Solution to balance work, study, and extracurricular activities for students
From the above analysis, it can be seen that AOF students often face pressure from
balancing academic work, part-time work, and participating in extracurricular
activities. To achieve success in all three areas, students need specific planning and
flexible self-regulation.

3.1.1 Set clear goals

Firstly, it is necessary for students to clearly identify the goals to be achieved

after completing four years of university and the job position after graduation. This is
extremely important; it is like a "guideline" to help students direct their studies,
movement activities, and part-time jobs on this main axis. Therefore, right from the
moment they become new students, they should immediately build for themselves a
goal, plan, and roadmap to strive for instead of just unconsciously accepting what will
happen. To do this, students need to clearly understand their field of study, understand
what they want in the future, what they want to get, and then determine what jobs they
will have to invest their efforts into.

For example, if you set the goal of graduating with good academic performance,
receiving a B1 English certificate, and acquiring programming skills, the direction will
be to prioritize efforts to study subjects well and spend time studying. For instance,
spend time learning English, participate in volunteer activities with foreign
organizations to improve English skills, and spend time participating in extra English
classes; aim to participate in movements as an MC, volunteer to speak, and host some
small class and club events to practice hosting skills.

3.1.2 Time management

This is an extremely important skill that helps you balance study, movement
activities, and part-time work. Time management skills include knowing how to
organize time, divide time, and use time appropriately. For example, during the first
and second years, you can spend more time learning basic knowledge and doing
movement activities to start building soft skills for yourself and, at the same time,
work moderately. Some jobs require communication to reduce shyness and become
bolder and more skilled. By the third year, when starting to study a major, you should
spend a lot of time on jobs that require professional skills, both to maintain income and
as an opportunity to apply the knowledge learned in class to real work. international.
That means students need to learn how to scientifically arrange their time for studying,
movement activities, and extra work based on priority criteria, with these 3 activities
depending on the implementation stage.

3.1.3 Flexible Work Options

Because of the extremely tight exam schedule at school, students need to have
flexible choices. Typically, when you are in the exam preparation period, you should
focus on exam review. You can take a leave of absence from work or postpone it. We
can't always handle all the tasks at the same time, so choose the most necessary ones.

3.1.4 Ensure health

Physical and mental health are more important than ever. Students are still
growing, so taking special care of their health is a wise choice. At least give yourself a
minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep. Your immune system will be strengthened,
your memory will be enhanced, and you will be able to cope with stress better.
During the day, eat a variety of nutritious foods to maintain energy. While takeout
is tempting, remember that you should also aim for a more balanced diet while trying

to balance your busy schedule. In addition, you should spend 15–20 minutes a day
exercising to improve your health and keep your mind comfortable. (Mai, 2020)

CONCLUSION

In this study, the author investigates how students balance working, studying,
and participating in extracurricular activities. The results show that maintaining a
balance between these activities is not easy. The following are the problems students
often encounter when balancing the above: stress, peer pressure, lack of study time,
and inability to manage time effectively. The researcher concluded that not being able
to balance well between working, studying, and participating in extracurricular
activities greatly affects the learning situation in class as well as the health of students.
Many students lose direction when doing multiple tasks at the same time.

The study also suggests certain methods to help students choose the method that
is right for them. Some methods are mentioned, such as clearly defining goals,
effective time management, having flexible choices depending on circumstances, and
ensuring good health. Hopefully, the results of this research will help students studying
at the Academy of Finance find a healthy balance between working, studying, and
participating in extracurricular activities.
