I Paul Kioko am pleased to present to dangle mining Limited this business proposal for mining
and crushing construction ballast rock in LR Mitamboni Machakos
Dangle Mining Limited consulted me and confirmed the presence of large deposits of
phonolite within the land, as shown in the map below. Having examined the viability of
the project, Dangle Mining Limited is interested in partnering to venture into this project to
produce ballast that will be used together with cement products produced by Cement
companies.
I believe this will contribute to increasing the market share of Cement Companies by
exposing the companies to ballast customers who will also need to use cement and cement
products for building purposes. Dangle mining Limited proposes to enter into a lease
agreement with the land owner for a period of not less than ten years
. 2.0 Identification of Need and Opportunity
Dangle Mining Limited has identified an opportunity that exists within this land owned by
private individual (family ownership).
This opportunity is in the form of large deposits of phonolite rock that the family does not use
but which is very suitable for producing ballast.
Fig. 1: Phonolite deposits shown straddling the Land, and the proposed leasing area.
The deposit occurs across a hill about five acres north of the main Nairobi – Kangundo Road
(see map above).
The land mass identified is like a pyramid in shape with the western and eastern flanks being
longer as depicted in the map above.
The land comprises black cotton soils, which gives an indication of poor drainage. The land is
generally flat, but with small hills on both sides of the division.
The proposed project land lies in a physiographic unit generally referred to as ‘’ ’’.
The basin underlined by a succession of volcanic lavas inter-bedded with tuffs thought to
have originated from rifting processes. There was natural displacement of blocks. Eastwards
on to a folded and down during the Pre-Cambrian age. Temperatures range between 94.5o F-
26.6OF, with an average rainfall of
13.31 inches of precipitation per year.
The weathering of the lavas and volcanic tuffs resulted into the development of phonolitic
and tuff occupying low lying areas.
Black and red cotton soil, indicative of poor drainage predominate the area. Phonolite and tuff
is present, while sandy and clay soils overlie the volcanic rocks.
In the area of LR (….), it is observed that the phonolites are overlain by tuffs,
In the proposed delineated area, the phonolites start from the hill, extending on both sides of
the hill for a distance, from where the tuffs begin on the western side. (See map).
Grass and scattered bushes are found in the virgin parts of the land. They are used for
grazing for both domestic and wild animals.
To the north of the proposed project land is an open pit tuff quarry where a certain company
mines tuff for use in making building blocks. On the western side there is another quarry
which mines phonolites for ballast production. The position of the quarry in relation to the
project land is shown on the map above.
3.2 Reserves
The reserves are huge, but a proper estimate can only be obtained through drilling exploration.
However a quick estimate from the data obtained on the field can be computed as follows:
A=Area
V=Volume
H=Height
AD=Average
Density M=Mass
MT=Metric Tones
Reserves calculated based on ten to fifty meters deposit thickness and a density of
M=D*V
V=B.A*H
50,0002
*80m
=2,500,000
M=40,000,000 M3
With mining capacity of 1000 t/day this is projected to last 100 years.
Taking into account of the 30% of wastes produced during extraction and
Exito Limited will target a market comprising both building contractors and personal homes
building. Once the quarry has been set up, they expect to produce about 1,000 tons per day
of the finished product.
Quarrying in the project land would begin about 1.2km from the Kanyua town, with an
establishment of a 6-meter wide haulage road. This road would be made by improvement of
the current road but it will branch to the actual quarry point as shown in the map below.
It is anticipated that the quarry will be started at an area about 1.5km from the Nairobi –
Kangundo road, which has been identified to have immense outcrops of phonolite.
Assuming sufficient thickness, the quarry will be developed first to the south, and then north
and the height of the quarry face will increase as the quarry progresses to reach about 8
meters.
The overburden will be pushed on a dump site planned to be located along the western
boundary line of the project land.
The western eastern limits of the quarry pit will be determined by the width of the haulage
road.
There are two methods by which rocks and minerals are broken down prior to crushing; (1)
blasting by use of explosives and (2) rock breaking using a breaker hammer attached to an
excavator.
5.1.1 Blasting Method
A blasting operation involves drilling of blast-holes, charging them with high explosives and
blasting using a specialized initiating device.
In open cast mining, blast-holes are drilled vertically or inclined at an angle of between 10 –
15 degrees from the vertical and charged with explosives comprising of ANFO as the
standard column charge sensitized with high strength, high VOD boosters or caps with
sensitive slurry /emulsion explosives as a priming base charge for initiation.
- Blasting materials.
Rock breaking method involves breaking of the rocks using an excavator which has a rock
breaker attachment operating through a hydraulic hammer.
The hammer is operated by placing the tip of the hydraulic hammer on the rock surface and
with the strong impact blows of the hammer it breaks the rock into rock fragments of
different sizes.
The oversized boulders are hammered further to reduce them to manageable sizes. A mobile
rock breaker envisaged could break up to 2tons /minute or about 1,400tons for an 8 hour/day
operation.
The advantage of using a rock breaker is, when the excavator is not breaking the rocks, a
bucket can be fitted quickly and used for loading the trucks or feeding the crusher.
- Excavator
- Hammer
- One operator
5.2 Crushing
The purpose of crushing blasted or broken rock in a quarry is to reduce them to the desired
rock or mineral sizes to meet the specifications of a particular use.
The size of the finished product and production targets determine the selection of the crusher
to be used in a quarry operation. Ballast product is required to be of sizes of not more than 2
inches; therefore, the selection of the crusher must have a finished product size of less than 2
inches.
Because of the need to cut costs on production, Exito Limited propose to operate in-pit
crushing using a mobile or semi-mobile crusher. The use of a mobile crusher has the
advantages of reducing the number of mining equipment, manpower and amount of dust
generated at the production site.
Ballast crushing and screening plant consists of jaw crusher, impact crusher, cone crusher,
VSI stone crusher, vibrating screen, and belt conveyers. Jaw crusher is used as primary
crusher; impact crusher and cone crusher are used for finer crushing. The classification of
size of crushed ballast can be set and adjusted according to customers’ different requests.
The crusher will be at the quarry face and will be fed by a front end loader. Oversize boulders
will be broken down further into smaller pieces with the hammer before being fed into the
crusher.
Big stones are transferred to jaw crusher through vibrating feeder from hopper for primary
crushing. The crushed stones are then transferred to the impact crusher through a belt
conveyor for secondary crushing. The finished ballast product is mainly cubic, and separated
to different sizes.
The aggregate with suitable sizes will be transferred to the final product pile, while aggregate
with unsuitable size will be transferred to the crusher machine for re-crushing. The sizes of
the final products will be graded and separated according to customers' requirements, and
the duster will be attached for the sake of environment protection.

Dangle Mining Limited undertakes to favorably rehabilitate the land where quarrying has been
done by in filling the open pits and dressing the soils.
The selection of quarry equipment, their capacity and numbers is based on the projected daily
production requirement and sales volumes.
Dandle Mining Limited proposes to have the following equipment on site for mining and
crushing of phonolite for ballast:

1. Creation of employment
This proposal, if granted, will be mutually beneficial to Dangle Mining Limited & Red Eagle
Limited and East African Portland Cement Company Limited in the following ways:
1. Dangle mining Limited, having long experience in mining, production and sale of
ballast to the construction sector, will promote the EAPCC Blue Triangle brand to its
clients all over the country, hence resulting in increased cement sales.
2. The project will be a source of income for the land owners for land that would otherwise
lie idle because the phonoloite mining deposits is capital investment enterprise.
8.0 Conclusion
Dangle mining Limited therefore has to entered into lease agreement with the land owners, a
Mother and eight sons who will duly sign consents and contract forms with the Company
Limited leading to a 10-15 years leasing arrangement in part of LR(….), at annual Rent of
