CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. DESIGN REPORT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The following technical report provides an analysis of the existing approved design of the gravity and
lateral force resisting system of the five-storied main factory building, on which two separate canteen sheds
have been constructed. The building is comprised of steel moment resisting with brick infill. This report
is based on approved 5 storied building design DEA report, includes adequacy check of existing structure
along with roof top steel shed buildings.

These factory building of CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. including Roof Top Steel Shed, located
at Plot No: M/3, Road No: 5, Section: 7, Mirpur-11, Dhaka.

The authority of CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. has engaged ECO-TECH CONSTRUCTION

LTD for performing Design Report along with checking architectural and structural drawing of the
building, based on approved design reports and FEM from ALLIANCE.

For structural design one of the key inputs is the concrete and steel strength. Here we considered design
strength of steel is 36 Ksi. Considering BNBC referred loading combinations, we analyzed the structure
& found that all the steel columns, beam, rafters and bracings are adequate.

RSC Observations:

Comments:
1. We found that the Alliance-approved DEA was based on the proposed new story construction and
the rooftop shed, as outlined in the approved DEA design, drawings, and review comments (refer to
the Alliance-approved DEA and the attached CCVV report). However, the factory did not construct
the new floor; only the canteen sheds were built. The DEA has been updated to reflect the existing
conditions, and the EA report and FEM have been revised accordingly.

5|P a g e
CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. DESIGN REPORT

2. The buildup of the toilet portion was found to be 8” to 9”, whereas it was previously considered and
noted to be 7”. The drawing and load considerations for the floors in the FEM have been updated to
reflect the existing condition.

3. Some connections in steel joints had gaps due to loose or missing bolts. The factory was advised to
tighten the bolts to close the permissible gaps where they were found. After making the corrections,
the factory provided illustrations as shown below, and the joint gaps were found to be acceptable and
OK.

3.2 CODES AND PRACTICES

For the present project relevant sections of BNBC 2006 guideline have been used for analysis. For the reinforced concrete
design check, American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-99) code has been consulted as and when became necessary to
complement the BNBC guideline.

Codes and References Book

Codes Used in Analysis -
1. Bangladesh National Building Code 2006 ,
2. ASCE 7 - Minimum design loads for buildings Other Structures.
3. Metal Buildings Manufacturers Association (MBMA).
4. ACI 318-99, Building code requirements for structural concrete.
5. Code of Practice for the structural use of Steel (AISC) 13th Edition.

In the preparation of the calculations found on the following pages, several documents outside the construction drawings
and specifications were referenced. The main source of information was the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC-
2006) , specifically for both wind and seismic loads. All of the necessary variables, equations, and values needed to
calculate the loadings and base shears were found from this code. ACI 318 -99 has been used for reinforced concrete
design and detailing. A document utilized in the calculation of both roof loadings and steel design was the American
Institute of Steel Construction AISC LRFD 93.

3.3 MATERIAL PROPERTY

The principal material of construction is reinforced concrete. As per investigation and design drawings, the following
material properties has been used:
Yield strength of Structural Steel, Fy = 36,000 lb/in2
strength of concrete, fc' = 1140 psi & for retrofit 3000 psi.
Modulus of Elasticity, Ec calculated as per Brick aggregate.

Note: Damage factors for ACI_562 table for calculation of concrete compressive strength had been used while
approved of the 5 storied FEM. The references are shown as below: (ACI-562) & (barlett & macgregor 1995).

3.4 LOADS
The loads that may act upon the structure are as follows:

3.4.1 Dead Loads

Dead loads (D) are those gravity load which remain acting on the structure permanently without any
change during the structures normal service life. These are basically the loads coming from the weight
of the different components of the structure. For the sake of convenience in the analysis, sometimes
this kind of loads are divided into two types, namely a) self-weight of the structure (SW) and b) the
weight coming from the non-structural permanent components of the building (SDEAD). In steel and
concrete roof shed building the weight of beams, columns, steel frame etc. which form the main
structural system is considered the self-weight (SW). The weights of floor finish, water proofing layer,
partition walls and other non-structural permanent components generally constitute the rest of the total
dead load, i.e. (SDEAD). For the analysis and design checking of the building, following are the values
of dead loads,

Unit weight of reinforced concrete = 150 pcf

Unit weight of brickwork = 120 pcf

Unit weight of steel = 490 pcf

3.4.2 Live Load

Live load is the gravity load due to non-permanent objects like machines, furniture, and human.
Analysis has been carried out base on load recommended by BNBC (2006). For checking if needed
reduced live load are also used to find present condition of the structure 12 psf in roof shed has been
considered to find present condition of the structure.

3.4.3 Wind Load (W)

Bangladesh is typically a storm prone area where due consideration to the thrust due to storm must be
given in the analysis and design of building and structures. Wind load due to storm is typically modelled
as lateral thrust force causing sway or overturning of the building. Detailed specifications on wind loading
on buildings are outlined in BNBC (2006). The present project is located in Dhaka, for which the
following basic parameters are used in wind load calculation.

3.4.4 Earthquake Load (E)

Proper structural design of any building structure must include loads due to earthquake shaking. Although
there has been no major incident of earthquake hazard in the recent past of Bangladesh, earthquakes are
not uncommon in this area. Scientific geological study of the earth crust below Bangladesh shows that
Bangladesh does fall in moderate to high seismic risk zone. Statistical evidence from past major and minor
earthquake incidents shows that a major earthquake is overdue in the recent times of geological scale.
Therefore, it is necessary to prepare against any possible earthquake hazard. It should be kept in mind that
the objective of earthquake resistance building design is not to make a strong building which can resist
any damage due to earthquake. In stead, earthquake resistant design basically aims at minimizing the
possible damage and casualty to an acceptable level.

Regarding the earthquake resistant structural design, it essential that the specific design code is followed.
For the analysis and design checking of this building, Equivalent Static Force Method of BNBC (2006) is
followed. The main considerations for calculation of earthquake load are given below.
  Zone co-efficient, Z = 0.15 (zone 2, As Per BNBC 2006)
  Structure importance co-efficient, I = 1.00 (Standard Occupancy, Table 6.2.23, BNBC 2006)

  where Numerical co-efficient, Ct = 0.03 in SI unit for RC structural moment resisting frame.

  where Numerical co-efficient, Ct = 0.035 in SI unit for Steel structural moment frame.

  Response modification co-efficient, R= 6 (For Steel) (OMF, Table 6.2.24, BNBC)

  Response modification co-efficient, R= 5 (For RCC) (OMRF, Table 6.2.24, BNBC)

 
Site co-efficient, S3= 1.5 (type 3 soil as suggested in Table 6.2.25, BNBC)

3.5 METHOD OF ANALYSIS

Depending on the type of project, there are several well-established methods among which Finite Element
Method (FEM) is perhaps the most sophisticated and all -encompassing one. For analysis and design
checking of the building, powerful finite element based structural design software package SAP2000
V21.0.2 has been employed for analysis. Some aspects of the analysis process are discussed in the following
paragraphs.
A full three-dimensional modelling of the structure has been developed using frame and plate/shell
elements. At base level, the columns are assumed to be hinged for shed on RCC building and fixed for
shed on steel building.

3.6 LOADING AND LOAD COMBINATION

The basic sources of loads are described in earlier section. These loads are applied on the mod el in seven
basic categories. These are as follows:
  Self-weight of structure (SW).
  Floor finish and partition wall (SDEAD).

  Live load on roof (LL).

  Earthquake load on North-South Direction (Ex).

  Earthquake load on East-West Direction (Ey).

  Wind load on North-South Direction (Wx).

 
Wind load on East-West Direction (Wy).

17 | P a g e
CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. DESIGN REPORT

These seven basic load cases are analysed in ETABS V2016.2.0 . The results are then combined in
accordance with the specifications set forth by BNBC 2006 guideline.

Load Combinations for Steel Structures:

Where, D = Dead Load, Lf = Floor live load, Lr = Roof live load, W = wind load and E =
earthquake load.

Over Previously approved model, For shed loads, load pattern have ben included differently as
WindS , and has been incorporated with load combinations.

in load combinations.

3.7 BOUNDARY CONDITIONS

In any finite element analysis, applying appropriate boundary conditions are important. Without
appropriate boundary conditions the model of building structure may not be stable. On the other hand,
application of excessive restraints may render the structure too stiff resulting in development of
unreasonable stresses. For a structure like this building, it is reasonable to assume that the bases of columns
are not fully restrained in all directions.

3.8 APPLICATION OF LOAD AND ANALYSIS

A static analysis is performed using the loadings and combinations of loads (mentioned earlier) for the
factory building. Some pictorial representation of the analysis results is shown in figures below.

Rafter-to-Rafter connection plate & Bolt Adequacy Check:

Depth of girder/beam, d = 200 mm 7.874 in

Thickness of the web, tw = 4 mm 0.157 in
Flange width of the girder/beam, b f = 125 mm 4.921 in
Flange thickness of the beam, tf = 5 mm 0.197 in
Allowable shear stress for A325 (bearing type), Fv = 21 ksi (From table 7.1, pp~185)
Allowable tensile stress of one bolt, F t = 44 ksi
Tensile strength of electrode material (E70 electrodes), F u = 70 ksi

Shank diameter of bolts, db = A325 0.47244 in 12 mm

SOLUTION:
Number of bolts above and below the tension flange:

Tensile force developed in the tension flange, Ff = M/(d - tf) = 18.44 kips
Shank area of the bolt (one), Av = 3.141 x d b2 /4 = 0.1753 in2
Tensile force capacity per bolt, Rt = Av x Ft = 7.71 kips
Hence, Required number of bolts in tensile force zone, Nb = T / Rt = 2.39
(Symmetrical placement above and below the tension flange should be done)

Try 0.4724409 in diameter bolt = 8 nos.

Welding Size:
Shear force in fillet welds, Rw = T / Lw = T / (2bf - tw) = 1.9 kips/in
Required weld size, a = Rw /(0.3Fu x 0.707) = 0.13 in 4 mm

Width of the Joint Plate:

Width of the joint plate, W = bf + 1 = 5.921 in 151 mm

Lenght of the Joint Plate:

Minimum erection clearance for bolts, E = 1 in
Minimum edge distance (Center of hole to edge of joint plate), Le = 1 in

Positions of bolts above tension flange, Pf = a + E = 1.13 in

Length of the joint plate, L = d + 2(s + Le) = 12.134 in 309 mm OK

Thickness of the Joint Plate:

Moment arm for bending moment of joint plate, Pe = Pf - a - (db/4) = 0.88 in
Ca = 1.13
Cb = bf / W = 0.912
Area of the tension flange, Af = bf x tf = 0.969 in2
Area of web (clear of flanges), Aw = (d - 2tf) x tw = 1.174 in2
am = CaCb(Af / Aw)1/3 (Pe / db)1/4 = 1.13

Bending moment acting on the joint plate, M = amFfPe/4 = 4.58 kips-in

Required joint plate thickness, tp = 6M / (0.75Fy x W) = 0.41 in 11 mm

Provided 12 mm
Hence OK

5 FOUNDATION ADEQUACY CHECK :

The Foundation system is Shallow Foundation- Single Rectangular Footing. Footings have been retrofitted as
per approved retrofit drawing.

Note: It is obvious from previous DEA report that foundations were retrofitted & size, rebar was checked
based on 6 story building (including one flat floor for both rcc & steel ) & roof top canteen load. The previous
report footing check load page is attached below. As we have remodeled the roof top canteen sheds in this
approved FEM model & has considered as built condition 5 story building, so, we have found all reaction
loads less than the reactions were used while footing check in approved DEA. Bearing capacity is collected
from previous approved report, soil test report & sample calculation is provided.

However, we are rechecking also footings based on our obtained base reactions.

Soil Bearing capacity calculation based on SPT Value:

SPT Calculation From Soil test report:

Footing Depth 8 ft 2.44 m

For 1.5Metre = SPT 3

For 3 Metre = SPT 11
So, For 1.5+0.94=2.44 metre/ 8ft= SPT= 5.01

So, Average SPT= 4.005

CONCORDE GARMENTS LTD. DESIGN REPORT

5 CONCLUSIONS

According to BNBC guideline loading condition

 FEM model has been updated based on previous approved FEM & incorporating roof top canteen sheds
in one single model.
 Roof top steel sheds has been checked for strength & serviceability. Both of the shed members were
found safe & within stress allowable limit.
 Previously approved 5 storied FEM model has been checked both for RCC portion & steel portion. All
members are found safe & within stress limit.
 Previously while approval from Alliance, foundations were checked based on 6 story building & roof top
canteen over RCC portion. So, this time from updated model, reaction loads are found lesser as no
proposed new flat floor has been considered in FEM. However, foundation have been checked & found
safe.
 Overall serviceability of the whole structure has been checked & found safe & within allowable limit.

S.L Item Evaluation

01 Foundation Foundation size & thickness are adequate against bearing capacity, settlement, punching
shear and reinforcement
02 Rigid Frame Steel Rafter, Main Beam, Sub Beam and column sections are adequate
03 Lateral Stability and Drifts are in the allowable limit
Serviceability
04 RCC Beam and Pedestal Grade beams and pedestals are adequate.
05 Rigid Connection Connection design is appropriate against moment and axial
06 Roof top shed Sheds are adequate, and main building Ok upon approved alliance report and approval.
