    Valentine's Day originated from the story of Saint Valentine, a third century Roman priest. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage for young men so they would not be distracted from war, but Valentine continued to perform marriages in secret. When caught, Valentine was arrested and sentenced to death. While in jail, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with his jailor's daughter. Before his death on February 14th, he allegedly wrote her a love letter signed "from your Valentine", which inspired the modern tradition of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. Today, people celebrate with gifts of chocolate, flowers, and cards expressing love, friendship and affection.
