Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation software widely used for creating visually engaging and
professional presentations. In this Lab, you will learn how to use essential PowerPoint features
and perform tasks related to creating and customizing presentations.

Key Concepts of PowerPoint

1. Layouts

A layout determines the arrangement of text, images, and other elements on a slide. Common
layouts include:

 Title Slide: Includes placeholders for the presentation title and subtitle.
 Title and Content: Includes a title at the top and space for content below.
 Blank: A slide with no predefined placeholders.

2. Creating New Slides

To create a new slide:

1. Go to the Home tab.


2. Click on New Slide.
3. Choose a layout from the dropdown menu.

3. Editing Slide Content


You can edit slide content by clicking on placeholders and typing text or inserting images. Use
the Insert tab to add clip art, pictures, or shapes.

4. Designing Slides

The Design tab allows you to apply slide themes and background styles. You can choose from
built-in themes or customize colors and fonts.

5. Inserting Clip Art and Images

1. Go to the Insert tab.


2. Select Pictures or Online Pictures to add visuals.
3. Resize and position the image as needed.

6. Adding Transitions and Animations

 Transitions: Effects that appear when moving between slides. Apply them from the
Transitions tab.
 Animations: Effects for text and objects within a slide. Use the Animations tab to
customize.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, a New Slide refers to the creation of an additional slide in a


presentation. It allows users to add content and structure to their presentation, such as text,
images, charts, videos, or other multimedia elements.

7. How to Add a New Slide

1. Using the Ribbon:


o Go to the Home tab.
o Click on the New Slide button in the Slides group.
o A new slide will be inserted after the currently selected slide.
2. Right-Click Method:
o Right-click on an existing slide in the slide navigation pane (left side).
o Select New Slide from the context menu.
3. Shortcut Key:
o Press Ctrl + M (Windows) or Command + M (Mac) to quickly add a new slide.

Choosing a Slide Layout

 When you click the drop-down arrow under the New Slide button, you can select a
specific layout for your new slide, such as:
o Title Slide
o Title and Content
o Section Header
o Two Content
o Blank
o Comparison, etc.

Customizing the New Slide

After adding a new slide, you can:

 Add text in the placeholders.


 Insert images, tables, or charts.
 Change the slide layout using the Layout button.
 Apply design themes to make it visually appealing.

The New Slide feature is essential for creating structured and professional presentations.

Exercise 1: Seasons Presentation

Objective: Create a 5-slide presentation based on the seasons.

1. Open PowerPoint and select a design theme from the Design tab.
2. Create the following slides:
o Slide 1: Title Slide
 Title: “The Seasons”
 Subtitle: BY: “Your Name”
o Slide 2: Title and Content Layout
 Title: SPRING
 Content:
 March 20th is the first day of Spring.
 Spring lasts from March to June.
 Observed holidays: Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.
o Slide 3: Title and Content Layout
 Title: SUMMER
 Content:
 June 20th is the first day of Summer.
 Summer lasts from June to September.
 Observed holidays: Independence Day and Labor Day.
o Slide 4: Title and Content Layout
 Title: AUTUMN
 Content:
 September 22nd is the first day of Autumn.
 Autumn lasts from September to December.
 Observed holidays: Veteran’s Day and Election Day.
o Slide 5: Title and Content Layout
 Title: WINTER
 Content:
 December 21st is the first day of Winter.
 Winter lasts from December to March.
 Observed holidays: Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, and
St. Patrick’s Day.

Exercise 2: Hobbies Presentation

Objective: Create a 4-slide presentation about hobbies from the group provided.

1. Pick one group:


o Sewing, Cooking, Baking
o Running, Reading, Writing
o Biking, Basketball, Football
2. Create the following slides:
o Slide 1: Title Slide
 Title: “Hobbies”
 Subtitle: BY: “Your Name”
o Slide 2-4: Use a different layout for each slide and add:
 A description of each hobby (3 sentences).
 Relevant clip art for each hobby.

Practice Tasks
