The reason why it’s important to distinguish between sexism and femmephobia is

that sexism is when discrimination and oppression happens towards women

because they’re women, whereas femmephobia is the discrimination and
oppression towards femininity as a whole.

For example, I think that a reason why a lot of straight, cis, White men dislike queer
femme men is because straight, cis, White men see men behaving femininely, and
because of their homophobia and femmephobia, they are seen as inferior because
they are visibly feminine and homosexual. On the other hand, with queer women,
straight men see women, something they are attracted sexually to, engaging in
sexual behaviours with other women and as a consequence of sexism and
femmephobia, queer women are often subjected to fetishization and objectification
as men believe that they are for their entertainment.

Additionally, femmephobia affects more than just cis women in its impact, as
femmephobia affects anyone who acts or appears femininely, and any association
with femininity is thus seen as inferior to anything associated with masculinity.
This can manifest in small ways like masculine men rejecting anything they perceive
as feminine, even if it’s just the colour pink. This rejection doesn’t stem from
personal preference either, it often comes from a place of disgust which further
perpetuates the prejudice around femmephobia.

On the other hand, examples of sexist problems in society would be the debate
around bodily autonomy and how men believe that because they are biologically
men, they are superior to anyone who isn’t and can choose what happens to your
body.

Though these problems are often working hand-in-hand towards the oppression and
devaluing of femininity and women, it’s important to note when something is
femmephobic, and when something is sexist, as they have different impacts in
different demographics.
