Community is a group of people with commonality such as norms, religion,
values customs or identity. It is a group of people who interact with one another, for
example, as friends or neighbors. This interaction is typically viewed as occurring
within a bounded geographic territory, such as neighborhood or city. The word
community was derived from the Latin word communis which means “common” or
“shared”.
Geographical community is a community where members share the same
geographical vicinity such as a village, province or neighborhood. Nongeographical
community is a community formed based on needs, ideas, interests, identity, practices,
and roles in social institutions such as at home, all work, in government, society, or the
community at large.
Types of Community
1. Urban – Highly commercialized and industrialized, vast business centers,
corporate industry, high population, low human interaction, high in
progress/advancement
2. Suburban – Somewhat commercialized, medium enterprises/ businesses,
medium population, average in terms of human interaction, average level in
progress/advancement
3. Rural – Mostly is physical landscape is for agricultural, have small stores
providing basic needs, low in population, High in human interaction, low in
progress/advancement
Community Dynamics are the changes in community structure and composition over
time. Sometimes these changes are induced by environmental disturbances such as
volcanoes, earthquakes, storms, fires and climate change.
Community Action is any activity that increases the understanding, engagement and
empowerment of communities in the design and delivery of local services. There are 3-
key points in grasping the definition more meaningful:
1. Understanding – raise an awareness about certain communal issues that needs to be
addressed;
2. Engagement – Once issues are assessed properly and people in the community
understand the needs, they work collaboratively to act on it; and
3. Empowerment – enable the people to independently decide, plan-out and take action
to control the situation they have in the community. This means, initiative and decisions
come from internal group organized for the benefit of everyone.
