ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

MAXIMUM TIME ALLOWED: 2 HOURS

1. (a) Two functions f and g are defined by

1 1
f (x) = (3x + 3−x ) and g(x) = (3x − 3−x ).
2 2

i. Calculate f (0) and g(0).

ii. Prove that f (x) ≥ 1 for all real values of x.

iii. Simplify f (u + v)f (u) − g(u + v)g(u) and comment on your answer.

(b) State the largest possible domain of the real-valued function

2x + 1
f :x→
x2 − 1

and show that the range of f is the set of all real numbers.

(c) Prove that the graphs of the mappings

f : x → (x − 3)2 and g : x → 4/x

touch at a point where x = 1, and find the coordinates of any other common point.

Sketch the two graphs on the same axes and calculate the area of the region bounded
by the graphs.

2. (a) Differentiate
2x + x2
− 2 ln(1 + x)
1+x
with respect to x.

Deduce that
2x + x2
> 2 ln(1 + x)
1+x
for all x > 0.

(b) Prove that the curves

5y − 2x + y 3 − x2 y = 0 and

2y + 5x + x4 − x3 y 2 = 0

intersect at right angles at the origin.

(c) Resolve
x2 − 5
(x + 1)2 (x2 + 1)
into partial fractions.

Hence, or otherwise, evaluate

(x2 − 5)dx
Z
.
0 (x + 1)2 (x2 + 1)

3. (a) Given that y = tan2 x + b ln(cosx), show that y has no stationary value in the range
0 < x < π/2, unless b > 2. If b = 8, show that the stationary value is a minimum.

(b) Find the minimum value and the maximum value of the function f , defined for all
real x, by
2
f (x) = (2x + 1)e−x .

Sketch the graph of f , showing all its important features (i.e. intersection with axes,
coordinates of stationary points, asymptotes, etc.)

2
You may assume that lim (2x + 1)e−x = 0].
x→∞

(c) Sketch completely the graph of the curve y = 2x5 − 5x2 + 1 and calculate the area
bounded by the curve and the coordinate axes.

4. (a) Obtain from first principles the derivative with respect to x of the function defined by

1
y = x+ , x 6= 0.

(b) A farmer wishes to enclose two adjacent fields, each the shape of a trapezium ADF E
and EF CD respectively where the parallel sides AD = x, EF = 2x and BC = 3x.
Also, DF = F C = l. The side AB is along a bank of a stream and requires no fencing.
The farmer has 600 m of fencing material available for the remaining sides (including
EF ).

i. Express in terms of x: the length l, and the total area A of the two fields.

ii. Find, in hectares, the maximum value of A. [1 ha = 104 m2 ].

(c) Evaluate:
